There is no other synth with the same engine with at least 10 notes of polyphony (I think that is only possible if you buy 2 PLG-AN boards, and Iam not sure if they are compatible with the actual Yamaha workstations).

Unless Yamaha makes a new improved model, I don't think the AN1x has a replacement and it might always be a good synth to keep.
The Motif and Motif ES, all models including rack, can take two of the AN boards. the new Motif XS cannot.

Another vote for the An1X, it was my first synth. It was easy enough to get cool sounds out of it without knowing what the h**l I was doing, but it's deep enough that (having had it for 7 years now) I'm still figuring out new things I can do with it.

The MicroKorg is fun, great sound, compact, and can run on batteries. But it's nice to have full-size keys, more octaves, and the An1X makes a great controller keyboard for playing rack/desktop synths, softsynths, or whatever. And these days it only seems to go for slightly more ($300-ish) than the MicroKorg ($250-ish).
