Best new analog Polysynths
Just wanted some opinions on the best new analog polys under $2000. Has anyone done a side by side comparison of a P8000, Poly Evolver, and Andromeda. Am I leaving anything out worth trying? I am not really interested in monosynths.
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Best new analog Polysynths
There has been plenty of discussion related to the P08/PolyEvolver/A6 comparisons just do a search there have been some great reviews.
Prophet 08, Mini D, Radias, 2 x JD-990, Juno-60, 2 x JP-8080, Fantom X6, Speakeasy Stereo Rackmount Vintage Tube Preamp ...

Re: Best new analog Polysynths
The REAL f**k problem is that there are no more polys. Seriously, come on. SOMEBODY make another one! No racks!

Re: Best new analog Polysynths
Also, the P08 and the A6 are COMPLETELY different and both rock. The P08 has a more aggressive sound while Andy can bring tears to you eyes with it's beautiful spacey sound. Also, the Andromeda has an awesome unison section that can be polyphonic. Things can get massive with that. But the A6 has annoying drawbacks like glitches, a kinda retarded (but powerful) matrix modulation layout. Sorry, but after using K2000's for years, I refuse to menu dive again. The P08 sounds great, and I like the stack function a lot, and tend to use it as a dual channel 4 voice synth. Downside... the distortion. The P08 was "designed" to be able to distort the oscillators and VCA. It sounds like s**t when it does. It's not useful distortion like filter overdrive or saturation, but clipping annoying crappy distortion. Many will disagree, but I find it useless and would rather have more volume than distortion.
With all that, I sold the A6 a long time ago and now have the P08, but I would love to have an Andromeda again too. HAHA.
Hope that helped. I am sure it didn't.

I'd also like to see where you can get *both* a PEK and a little phatty used for 2k... considering most PEKs I've seen used were more than $1500

Re: Best new analog Polysynths
I see a *mono* Evolver for $1200, not a Poly. Poly Evolvers don't go for $1200, they go for more like $1800.

Re: Best new analog Polysynths
It's a matter of patience. There have been plenty of PEK keyboards lately between 1000-1200 USD on Ebay over the past few months. You can get a PE rack for around $800 now. And occasionally you see Little Phatty's for 700-800. So conceivably two grand for both could be done but it would take awhile. Not just an instant thing.
FWIW I don't like any modern analog polysynths that I've heard. I've never been a fan of the three Andromedas I've heard in person. Two old ones, one new one. It might be perfect if you were just going to buy one synth, it does everything OK, but I don't think it does anything really amazing.
At the risk of flaming I'll say that I'd rather have my JX10 w/PG800 than an Andromeda for what I do given the rest of my kit. And of course the T8 is in another world of awesomeness.

Re: Best new analog Polysynths
Yeah if you ever wanted a DSI synth now is the time. A MEK just went up this morning for $700 BIN. I think DSI being the current whipping boy of synth haters has gotten into the heads of people who own these things.

Re: Best new analog Polysynths
I always said that you MUST play both P08 and A6 to understand what do you like.
i bought my A6 in 2006... and it still surprise me. All that "menu digging" that everybody is used to say is not so true. You can do everything using the panels knob but there are so complex thing you can do with an A6 that is really impossible to avoid a menu... really impossible. But again standard analog sounds are easy to do simply using panels knobs... nothing more.
About sounds... I have two friends with a P08. They let me play it whenever I want and I spent some good hours with P08. Well... I admit it has a really powerful sound... but... imho it's sounds palette is by far more narrow than A6. All the strings sounds the same, all the leads too, ok you can call it "character or soul" of the instruments but to put it simply it's a big limit in sound palette.
The A6 perhaps has less raw sound... but it can do really really really any kind of sound. Sometime it's unbelivable that some so different sounds comes from ONE synth. It shines on pad, but I have some really minimoog leads (I admit I used an A6 lead to do a classic Minimoog lead leaving the voyager off !!!)
Think that with "few" more $$$ you have A LOT more. Double polyphony, double filter, ribbon controller, 16 part multitimbral (MIX MODE where you can layer&split 16 analog sounds on the keyboard with 16 stepsequencer and 16 apreggiators !!! amazing for analog drum kits !!!) and POST FILTER MIX that are what makes the A6 a sound chameleon.
So... my +1 is goes straight to the A6. Unbelivable synth.
