MS2000
So my first synth was a korg ms2000 (6+ yrs ago), I went with it because it was cheep and read some good reviews on this site. I still use it and love it (recently Ive discovered how to get a fatter more organic sound).
Why does it get such a bad rap?
I'd like to upgrade soon and dont want to give up the ability to save my parches or edit them in real time via tons of knobs, any suggestions?
thanks

I think you can convert all your MS2000 sounds to the Radias.synthecks wrote:I'd like to upgrade soon and dont want to give up the ability to save my parches or edit them in real time via tons of knobs, any suggestions?
That could probably be a good upgrade as you would get many extras and way more polyphony.

What exactly is it that you need upgraded? It sounds like you're happy with it as it is.

Re: MS2000
Maybe just something new to me, I would love more poly/voices... maybe a roland, I always thought the SC pro5 would be my choice but now im not sure if the patches are what Id want...Im thinking something not so retro sounding but warm and the ability to save my progress.braincandy wrote:What exactly is it that you need upgraded? What is your budget? Are you wanting something modern or older?

Re: MS2000
Budget - $1000 range, Id like something older but really like the fact I can save my patches with my ms2000. I guess more importantly Im looking for something I can create my own patches starting from a basic sine wave, sequencing not important.

Re: MS2000
One thing I'll mention about your requirements--"warm" is a subjective term. What already sounds "warm" to you so that I can have something to compare my suggestions with? Any particular tracks or instruments that you have in mind?
I was going to suggest checking out a Prophet 08, but even used, they're still over your budget. I played around with one a few weeks ago and thought it sounded pretty good.
I'm not going to recommend a Polysix or Juno-60 as both have only a couple more notes of polyphony (6) than your MS2000. If polyphony wasn't an issue, either of those would be good choices.
You might want to consider a Yamaha AN1x. They're cheap ($300), have 10 notes of polyphony, split/layer capabilities, onboard effects, and make great controllers since they have aftertouch and a ribbon controller.
Another option is a Roland JX-10. I think it has plenty of warmth, potentially 12-note polyphony (depending on which mode you use), and it comes with a great feeling keyboard and can also do splits/layers. However, if you're new to programming, it has an unnecessarily complicated system of tone/patch storage and sound editing. Without the optional hardware editor, you should be able to score one for around $400. A JX-8P is a simpler, more straightforward precursor to the JX-10, capable of warmth, and can often be found for around $300 or less.

Re: MS2000
Novation Nova is a pretty awesome desktop.. a little hard to find - mine was about $400 shipped from Belgium.. lots of knobs, but also menu settings.. lots of room for saving presets.. the main thing is has on the MS is 7 simultaneous voices.. also i think it sounds a bit fatter and perhaps warmer than the MS2k..

Re: MS2000
The Yamaha AN1X looks more like what I was thinking and the NOVA looks too good to be true (ford hows the Analog sound modeling compare to true analog?).
Thanks for the responses thus far

Re: MS2000
well.. i actually haven't used it in a while.. i have never compared side by side to an analog..
back in like 2003 i made a song with almost all Nova voices.. here we go -

it shows some of what it can do.. but, i was still really learning back then..

Re: MS2000
I have both an AN1x and a Nova. I left the nova alone for ages, but I'm kinda getting back into it now.
The AN1x is more analogue sounding than the nova IMHO.
AN1x is a nice keyboard and does indeed make for a good midi controller.

Who say's it has a bad rap? The MS2K generally gets good chunk of respect as a V/A.. even around here, possibly the toughest crowd out there regarding V/A's.

Re: MS2000
I've noticed MS2000 prices in the UK are creeping up, but that might be down to ebay madness. I think I'd have one just to have it sit in the corner and menace visitors, I mean it does look the business doesn't it?
