Something relatively cheap that can emulate that classic 80s sound.

Classic 80's vocoders aren't cheap, cheap vocoders are Microkorg, MS2000, R3 etc. You'll be able to get close with one of them, whether or not it's close enough for you is another matter.

Electrix Warp Factory. Think there's one of the VSE Gear for Sale section right now actually.

Yeah vocoder is a feature available on dozens of synths from all ranges.

If you want "MR ROBOTO" vocoder, you must $$$$$$$$$$

Roland and Korg have included a vocoder on several models: JP8080, the one available on the SP808 ex sampler is a cool one, 12 var chars, several ways to link stereo, sharp, sostenuto.
Vocoders are not the star but more an extra nowadays....

JP8080 $500-600
SP808ex: $275-400

from the vocoders I've tried on relative modern gear, the best one is the SP808, since effect possibilites on vocals, are simple astonishing on this sampler, and vocoder parameters can be tweaked one by one with no exception, and the MIC effects, are simple..... awesome!

I agree, vocoders on so many pieces of gear now.

That said, I recommended the Clavia Nord MicroMod because unlike most all the rest of the pack, it has that classic 80s tone (if you wish).

cheers,
Ian

+1 micromod.

novation nova could work too, also look around for a 2nd hand MAM vocoder. It's built a bit s**t but i like it...

WarpFactory (built like the proverbial tank, by the way) and MicroMod are both good choices. The only problem with the latter is that it will soon have you wanting the full keyboard (or rack) version, then you'll become obsessed with the [seemingly nonexistent] voice-expansion board... #-o

I agree with the posts above. The MicroKorg will be your most popular option and now that a new model is out you may be able to find one for real cheap. PAiA makes a vocoder if you're interested in the DIY thing. I owned an Electrix vocoder for a couple of years and really disliked it. I didn't like the tone or the sound of the vocoder at all. I ended up selling it and never regretted it. So, I'd listen to the Elextrix vocoder first if you're picky about your vocoder sounds..

I just realize that I have 4 vocoders, and I barely use them.

the "voice transformer" on the JP8080 is a great one.

Nowadays you can find them even under a rock....

Maybe my next synth of vocoder, a fizmo, will call the martians to invade earth
