First Drum Machine?
I've decided it's time for me to get a drum machine, but i'm not too knowledgeable in that area. What would be a good reasonably priced drum machine that's fairly easy to use? I'm looking for something i might be able to scoop up on eBay for a good price.

Re: First Drum Machine?
Are you more interested in acoustic or electronic sounds? Also, what is the maximum you can spend?

Also what other gear do you already have?
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

Roland TR-505 possibly the 626, also any of the Yamaha RX's 11, 17, 21, 21L they are all quite cheap to buy.

If you can handle working with samples, the Korg ES-1 loaded with samples of any drum machine you want (they are all easily findable on the internet) will do you, plus give you a really nice sequencer and lots of manipulation capabilities. It's what I wish I had as my first drum machine.

Re: First Drum Machine?
shameless plug, I have an es-1 for sale in the classified. It's a great machine, only selling because I got an ESX-1.
the sampling gives you endless flexibility + decent effects + great sequencer.

Re: First Drum Machine?
The TR-505/626 fits your budget but are dated soundwise, no electronic drum sounds. Programming backup only via a tape interface no MIDI dumps
I would look for a used Alesis SR16 or a Boss DR550/660. If it matters, the Boss units only have MIDI IN so you can't back up your programming at all
or use it as a clock master.

Re: First Drum Machine?
i agree w/ the ES-1 being a great choice. more or less the ER-1 but you can load it w/ better sounds. easy to program, up to 64 step sequences, nice built in effects.
SR16 also IMO has pretty great live drum type samples.

Re: First Drum Machine?
My old roommate from college had one of these. For the price, I think it would be good a choice for a first drum machine. I fooled around with it from time to time, and it seemed pretty easy to work with.speak_onion wrote:If you can handle working with samples, the Korg ES-1 loaded with samples of any drum machine you want (they are all easily findable on the internet) will do you, plus give you a really nice sequencer and lots of manipulation capabilities.
