Need suggestions. I need a different Arp Avatar controller
Aww yeah, I just got an arp avatar and I hooked it up to my Korg Monopoly and it sounds great....BUT. The Mono/poly is expensive and I am not completely fond of the sound. So I am selling it and need another synth that has CV/Gate so I can control the Arp Avatar with it.
Any suggestions on a a good synth thats not too expensive that has cv/gate out?
I really would like something with an arpegiator and/or sequencer. Also, a polyphonic synth would ultimately be perfect.
Got any suggestions on what synths I could use. (Yes I know I could just sell my avatar and get an odyssey, but I am still lacking a synth that has an arpeggiator and is polyphonic.
NOTE: I need a voltage per octave CV synth.
I dont have anything with midi so dont suggest a converter.

Define 'not too expensive'. If you mean under $1000, there's maybe the SH-101 (think that ticks all the boxes except for polyphony, don't own one though so can't be sure).
The thing that's limiting your options is that the arpeggiator and sequencer (and polyphonic keyboard to some extent) are digital technologies whereas the cv/gate out is older analogue technology. There was a brief time when manufacturers where transitioning from one to the other where they included both, but there aren't that many options. I can't think of any synth that has polyphonic CV/gate out.
The Mono/Poly actually isn't that expensive, I don't think you could replace it with anything cheaper. If it was me I'd get a synth with a great arpeggiator and/or sequencer (V-Synth springs to mind) and a midi/cv interface. Rather than trying to get one thing that does an average job of everything you want get a few really specialised pieces that do it all really well.

Re: Need suggestions. I need a different Arp Avatar control
I understand that finding something polyphonic with cv gate is going to be tough. Thats why Im asking here.
I guess cheaper really isnt important. I just want something different than my mon/poly. Its probably the best option I have since it has an arpeggiator and polyphony. But I just dont like the mono/poly enough. It is not dirty enough and I already have a monophonic a minimoog and now the avatar, I want something different to control the avatar with. Im eyeing the Prohphet 600. Nice and dirty sounding with polyphony but no cv gate, I think
Midi to CV may be the way to go then. Or if you can think of just a super cheap crappy old synth that has CV and gate outbut no arpeggiator or anything that would work too. I have a minimoog but no cv gate out (only ins I think???) and i have an Arp Omni 1 but that only has gate and trigger out...no CV out ?!?!?!
I like the Dave Smith Mopho, but thats only because its yellow and has wood sides. Maybe the mono evlolver? if you can think of just a crappy slave keyboard with midi that has an arp and sequencer that would be cool.

Re: Need suggestions. I need a different Arp Avatar control
ooooook. So I've now spent 10 hours with the avatar/odyssey and i am bored. Sorry I found out that I acutally like the mono/poly for its nice arpegiator and polyphony. Anyone know of any analog synths that are polyphonic and have a sequencer and arpegiator on them? I have my Mono/poly on ebay right now and its over a grand in bidding. I either want to keep my korg or buy something a little different/better for maybe a little more money.
Any suggestions? Jupiter?, SCI?, Roland ...dave smith? idk
\
Any ideers are welcome.
ACTUALLY. I WILL ASK THIS QUESTION TOMORROW IN THE SYNTH SHOOTOUT.
I am thinking about a jupiter, or a prophet 5, 600, or 08. ...or a Poly evolver. Buy I really have no idea what the differences are between a poly evolver and a prophet 08. I will look into this stuff first.

first, send me your avatar...then go for a DSI PolyEvolver as you are probably not going to get bored of it. I'd look for one that has had the pot upgrade, or look to replace them off the bat...i had nothing but issues with the continuous turn ones on my MEK...

You should probably spend some more time with your avatar before you sell it (if that's your intention). It sounds like your mono/poly has grown on you and you have some regrets about putting it on ebay.
I would get a sequencer to run the avatar and then make a determination. I find that every synth has a vastly different character when played with keys and when sequenced. For cv sequencers you should check out the future retro mobius. It's compatible with V/Oct and Hz/V synths and it's super straight-forward to program. Plus, you can bypass the sequencer and simply use it as a midi to cv converter.
It also spits out din sync so you'll be able to slave your 808 in the future.

Yeah, I do sound pretty wishy washy. Im kinda stupid. But I have a minimoog already and I have an arp omni. The avatar doesnt give me too much extra (not that the omni is that comparable. Its too similar to my minimoog to justify keeping it. However, I do love the dirty flat sound of the avatar.
RIght now I drive a $750 truck from 1993. I dont think i can justify having three $1000+ monophonic synthesizers.
In regards to the sequencer, I was using the monopoly as the sequencer for the avatar a lot. That is when I had the most fun. But still...not much there extra.

FYI if there's more than 24 hours left in the auction, you can cancel that & keep it...

Nope. Less than 24 hours left but thankfully someone from Russia won the auction and I dont ship there. .....unless he wants a broken mono/poly.

Yeah, I spent 30 minutes on the phone with ebay about it today. They are still trying to rape me on the seller fees. Frustrating. Im just up in Detroit. You got any old school stuff you want to trade for an avatar or a mono/poly, or 13 Hammond organs?
