Synths for fun and investment
Three years ago I was lucky enough to get a 106 and a Pro One from a guy for £400 (I just missed his 202 for £150...), and sold the 106 as I didnt want to worry about the chips dying. I got £400, so making the Pro One free! I know I'm not going to get that again (tho I did get and EX5R for £60) but I bought and sold a few others after and have noticed even in 3 years those I sold and profited on are quite a fair bit more now. In fact, better than any savings or other financial scheme I've looked into. So that lead me to thinking, maybe I should put say £1000 or so into synths as an investment while still having the added bonus of them being in my studio. As I'm pretty good for monos with the Pro One, a CS01, a Mopho and an Acidlab Bassline, I want a big sounding poly. I've an AJ1, 1080, AN1X and a D70 so I'm looking for contrast really over compliment to these.
So, after dismissing a JP4 as I'm just so paranoid it'll need the kind of upkeep and care I can't afford, I've had my eye on a few..
DSI Prophet 08 (future classic?)
Alesis Andromeda (not sure it'll be too expensive and too complex)
MKS70 / JX8P with PG800 (the PG may even constitute the better investment but too similar filter wise to AJ?)
MKS80 without programmer
JX3P with PG200 (ditto PG800 and my preference to say a Juno 60)
I did consider the JD series but they seem to have levelled out and sonically in a similar ball park to the 1080. Any suggestions or comments?

If you really want a good investment then buy as many V-Synths as you can find.

This seems like an extremely unpredictable and volatile investment strategy.

Are vintage synths the new comic books?

Of course you haven't, the undervalued things that are going to go up in price are the ones that aren't in fashion, yet.gunark wrote:Genuinely? I've not really considered latter Rolands at all..Stab Frenzy wrote:If you really want a good investment then buy as many V-Synths as you can find.
That said, if you want an investment then put your money into property, not synths. You're not gonna make a decent return on your time and money from synths.

Seconded for the V-Synth... I think both the original and GT are definitely future classics.
I really want an original one someday... definitely a synth I have not overlooked.

Re: Synths for fun and investment
Yeah property is far out of my reach at the moment in the UK so instead of the money I'm saving for a house sitting in an account it makes more sense to invest it in something with a higher rate of return and fun which synths currently are.Stab Frenzy wrote:Of course you haven't, the undervalued things that are going to go up in price are the ones that aren't in fashion, yet.gunark wrote:Genuinely? Hmm V Synth... How is it's D50 impression? And it's filters?
On the other hand, what about an RE-301 Space Echo (tape echo is one of my most used effects and the 301 with the chorus is so nice) or maybe even start a Eurorack modular?

While it's great, it's not going to work in 5 years nor appreciate in value.GuyaGuy wrote:Omnisphere.

[kidding]The V SYnth is rubbish. Very cold and digital. And it's too big. Ugly to boot. Stay well away.[/kidding]
[deadly serious]If you're serious about investing and you're budget is small, look at savings accounts, saving certs, or forestry. Not synths. They break.[/deadly serious]

Re: Synths for fun and investment
Well, I went for the vsynth 2.0. Spent more than I wanted to for a first stab at synthesizer but, I felt the price was good for the item (based on recent sales). Will it be a good investment? If it helps my son create the music he hears inside, then the answer is yes!
