Need help looking 4 a new synth

Post by Morpher » Sat Jul 09, 2011 2:49 am

Hello fellow synth fanatics,

I wanna buy a new synth and I'd like to have some advice/tips!

What Im looking for is a versatile synth.
I wanna make some lush pads, bass and nice leads.

The most important thing for me tho is that I want to have a synthesizer without difficult menu's and confusing knobs with multiple functions. I like to see what I'm doing without going tru menu's..
I prefer a rack/desktop.

I have a Doepfer Dark Energy and I love it! It would be great to have something similar but with polyphony.
I also have an SH32 and I like it but it has those multi-functional knobs and menu's which I hate

My budget is 500 EURO (700 dollar)..

I hope you guys can help me out! :headbang:

Ay up, mate.

Your thread is almost the same as mine:

http://www.vintagesynth.com/forum/viewt ... 19&t=63088

Except you are including digital synths in your search, and this gives you loads more options than what I found. Although if you want a sound like the Dark Energy then you will have to stick to analogue (especially to avoid menus and multi-function knobs), and as you can see from my thread there are not many options.

I would recommend you ditch one parameter in your search, namely that it has to be a rack/desktop. This way you get to choose among some truly great analogue polysynths which are all one-knob-per-function and in unison mode are capable of sounding just like your Dark Energy (more powerful even), and in poly mode are capable of all the lushness you'll ever need.

My top two would be the Sequential Circuits Prophet-600 and the Korg Polysix. No menus, no multi-function stuff...just loads of knobs that do exactly what they say they do.

The Prophet already has midi, the Polysix can be retro-fitted. Apart from the size both synths perfectly match your description. Be aware of the following issues before paying your money:

- Prophet: ask the seller to confirm all the buttons work (to save patches etc).
- Polysix: ask the seller to confirm if the original battery has been replaced.
- both synths: ask for a basic audio demo to satisfy you that both sound ok.

I may hunt for a Prophet myself, at the moment I have two Polysixes. If you are interested in how I make them sound, see here (except tracks 7 & 9 which are Virus KB):

I recommend the Alesis Ion. I have two synths that I will never sell, my Korg Z1 and my Alesis Ion. In my opinion, the Ion is the most authentic analog sounding VA synth ever made, even when compared to VA synths that go for much higher prices. With all of the panel controls, menu diving is kept to a minimum, and you get three separately controlled oscillators per voice vs. the typical two. The Ion also has a built in vocoder. Trust me, you will not get any more bang for your buck than you will by picking up an Ion that's in good shape. I've seen Ions go for as low as $400 on Craigslist (I remember years ago when I'd see ARP Odysseys in classifed ads for $200-$300). I've been tempted to buy another Ion. Get one while you can, while the prices are low. As it says in the Electronic Musician review of the Ion (first link below), "The range of sounds you can achieve with the Ion is simply vast. You could easily pay twice as much for a synth that doesn't have this level of programmability."

Having played a nord lead, I must agree with megamanx. Even though it was my first time using it, everything seemed to be right there on the front panel. That has to say something because it was at a noisy guitar center, and I could still use it quite decently without being distracted. What ever synth you buy, this is my advice: do as much research as you can, and always check the facts that people give to you.

Thank you all for the advice! Still looking around for synths..
The Nord Leads seem nice! Never heard an Alesis Ion..
As for the vintage ones I dont think I will get my hands on one of those, because they're really hard to come by over here.
What about the JP8080?

700 dol equals to a Roland V Synth.

But I don't know if you can get one in that price today, I got mine on 700 around 4 years ago.

It's an incredible synthesizer. You won't find something more user friendly than the Vsynth, with so much features.

Radias does NOT sound like a dark energy, but they mix well imo.

I say it almost everytime, and it probably gets old to many of you; but I suggest the Novation Supernova.
There really isn't any menu diving, and I think it is a well rounded machine. It can do basses, leads, etc with the best of them. I've had the JP-8000 and the Nord Lead 2, but I ended up selling them both. I will never sell my Supernova.

Isn't it a shame that the Supernova wasnt able to develop as much as let's say the Virus, which has gone through A, B, C, and now TI generations? Or the Nord Lead which is now up to 3. Such a great synth. I mean there was the Nova too I guess, but I think they could have pushed the Supernova one more level to a Supernova III. They should at least bring it back as a shallow rackmount. I love that thing.

Unfortunately, i think we all know that the days of truly great synth releases are behind us.

It's actually developed even more than the Virus, through the K-Station, KS Series, X-Station/Xio and now Ultranova.

Virus = 5 generations, Nova = 7 generations.

I like the K-Series and the Xio/X-Station, but I know what you mean. There was just something about the Supernova that seems different to me. I've played around with the new Ultranova as well. I just can't seem to find the connection with any of the other ones like I can with the Supernova.
