Difficult decision - need some educated opinions.

Post by Hybrid88 » Sun Aug 21, 2011 2:34 pm

Hi guys,

Just like to get an idea from fellow VSE'rs on what's best to do here, first up it's not really a buying deal as much as a possible sell off -

Basically I've been building up a little setup over the last few years and I'm pretty much done, I have all the synths I want and now it's basically just a few bits of rack gear and a new computer to finish it off.

So, the dilemma is - I have recently purchased a PPG Wave 2.2 and a Roland System 100, including model's 101, 102, 104 & 109 (basically everything but the mixer). Now I had to borrow to buy them and It'll probably take me about a year to fully pay off, so do I keep them or sell? Possibly could keep one and sell the other, don't know.

Obviously I'd love to keep them both and these are both exceedingly difficult bits of gear to get here in Australia and no doubt I wont be able to get them again any time soon. The System 100 is in really nice shape, practically mint - so I'm sure you appreciate that it's a hard call for me.

Now the catch - I actually already own a System 100 model 101, and my studio is actually now full, so to get use out of the System 100 and PPG I would need to keep them in storage and bring them out when I want to use them.

Another deciding factor being that I have quite a good selection of analog synths already, so the Sys100 is probably overlap but the PPG is unique, however it's not a must have sound for me (ie. I could get by with the plugin version if needed).

Any opinions? A lot of things to consider... :?

Take a long walk. Drink some beers with a friend. Talk to your significant other/friend who happens to be of the opposite sex/some random person of the opposite sex. Call your mom/dad/sister/brother/grandparent... Basically do something that involves other people and has nothing to do with synthesizers, your studio or music in general.
Get your head out of your a*s for a few days. :)
Have some fun.

Then go back to your studio and ask yourself if it really matters, if you really need to put yourself in debt in order to keep a couple of museum pieces in storage.

You probably do not...

Thanks for your thoughts, yes trust me I know it does sound like I'm incredibly self absorbed here but honestly I'm at a turning point in my life at the moment and caring less about gear and am trying to do exactly what you suggested, meeting new people is hard for me but I'm giving it a go. ;)

BTW: The old me wouldn't have even questioned it, so it's a step in the right direction at least :)

Sell both and use some of the profits to take an evening cooking class or something. You'll learn a valuable skill that'll impress the ladies (and everyone else) way more than any old analog will and at the same time get a chance to be among other people in a setting that isn't as horrifying as the dancefloor can be to some of us. Sorry, I'm going OT here.

My opinion is that borrowing money to buy something which is going straight into storage is the behaviour of somebody with a problem. Perhaps speak to a psychiatrist. ;)

Or just sell them to somebody who'll use them.

Fair point, I should ad I did intend to have them set up when I bought it but the situation changed.

We all have our problems, I at least though do admit to them.

Yep nevermind. I have actually seen both for other reasons for what it's worth.

How something that cute can be illegal is beyond me, and one would think "over there" would be the perfect conditions for a tortoise. You could probably do without UV-lamps and stuff, provided you have a small garden and could make a shelter. They're also really good conversation starters. You see a sexy girl in a café? Whip up you tortoise and blast her fragile heart to bits.

Actually that's exactly why as far as I know, they want to protect the dwindling number of local frog species. Kind of like how they're currently desperate to keep fox's out of Tas because of the damage they'd do.

I'd still love a tortoise though, did have hermit crabs but the buggers couldn't stand the cold and ended up dead and smelling like piss ant (I still remember the distinct stench) - but I digress...

Yeah well, it's understandable I guess. Are there no native tortoises in tasmania?

Nope, no tortoises, turtles, native emus or tassie tigers left (you can thank the early settlers for the demise of those last two), actually I'm not certain we even have proper kangaroos, only those annoying wallabies that steal your sausages (and I thought they were supposed to be herbivores) :x

Thats a shame. Anyway, back on topic eh. I'd sell both synths, then contacted a private clinic about operating dozens of microphones inside my body, with mic-outs as piercings everywhere outside on my body.
