Alesis IO Dock for Ipad

Post by samuraipizzacat29 » Fri Oct 21, 2011 3:03 pm

Anybody gots? I'm trying to figure out if it's a good expenditure.

I'll use it for:
1) Wired Midi I/O. Keys/sequencer into apps, and Touch Midi to control other synths.
2) sampling. into maschine. garageband. etc.
3) if a good multi effects or sample masher came out.

so, basically just fun stuff. My concerns are with the common concerns of any sort of digital interface. Latency: is the midi spot on, clean, fun to use, or am I going to scream at it because I can never get timing right? Noise/headroom/dynamic range: I think we can all agree there's no point to inputs with a usable range the size of my......(nevermind).

edit: just saw the old thread in the general synths section. mybad for a "repeat". didn't look like there were any other opinions from actual owners, and I want the VSE critics to come out so I can hear about how awful it is...... ;)

I'd be interested in this too. I'm blown away by Moog's Filtatron and Animorph, and would like to use Filtatron as a sort of Kaoss Pad and Hard disk recorder away from the DAW.

Now, I'm still on the hunt for the most reliable stereo ipad recorder... Just a simple 'fill up the hard drive and transfer it to the computer' sort of thing...

I find McDSP Retro Recorder is great for that kind of thing.

Thanks, looks good. Any other stereo audio PCM recorders which I should be aware of, maybe with ipad interfaces?

just an fyi if you buy an io dock from zzounds right now it costs $167.98 (no tax and free shipping). You get a $25 gift card from zzounds for future purchase. AND alesis is running a rebate for a free dynamic mic and set of headphones. Not that I'm hanging by a thread on the quality of the mic and headphones, but I'd say that's a slammin' deal.

The iO dock is such a great concept, but unfortunately it lacks it's own DAC and just passes along the sound coming out of the iPad. The internal iPad DAC is not very good so the iO wouldn't be optimal for music playback if you're picky about sound quality. If Alesis ever make an iO dock with a quality DAC I'd be the first to buy it :-)
