trying to find the right sampler

Post by ianjhicks » Tue Jan 10, 2012 9:30 pm

Hi,

looking for some advice on samplers.. my main use for it is I want to sample sounds from my jd800 so I dont have to drag that beast out to shows anymore.

only requirements are that it has a keyboard (no rack units), is relatively light/portable, at least 2 part multi-timbral and the less expensive the better.

I currently have a mirage, but its a little too lo-fi sounding and just about as heavy as the JD800

just so you can get an idea of what I've been considering: roland s-50, casio fz-1, korg microsampler(?)

advice is much appreciated!

microSampler is not designed to do multi-sampling...not what you want at all.

Roland W-30, Ensoniq EPS, EPS-16 and ASR10 should be on your list.

To avoid: Roland S-10, Akai X7000 both using QuikDiscs; Korg DSS-1 is way too heavy though I've seen them go for $99!

Maybe consider turn of the century workstations like Trinity, Triton, Fantom, Motif although these will cost more. No floppies, less wear and tear, larger sample memory, usable synths and FX.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

The W-30 is based on the S-50, as the name implies it's considered a workstation (has a sequencer). It was the last of the Roland sampler family to come with a keyboard.

Do you have other keys that could be used to drive a module? You could recreate your JD800 sounds in a JD990 rack...not sure about current pricing on those. Of course you can find sampler racks dirt cheap, a local dealer has an Akai S2000 for $50...that's just crazy.

Good luck.

Personally I think you'd be better off with a laptop running Kontakt and Autosampler- that will give you a very accurate rendition of the JD-800 sounds, and it's painless because it's automated. Get a light USB controller and you're sorted.

About EUR5000 to EUR8000 depending on condition, provenance and board REVs. Excludes shipping.
