Analog style sequencer with midi and cv/gate

Post by haydenvan » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:23 pm

Looking for at least a 16 step sequencer that can output, transpose, and clock via midi or cv/gate. The only two I know of (within a decent price range) are the Doepfer Dark Time and the MFB Urzwerg Pro (which I can't find for sale in the states...)

Anyone else have other suggestions or comparison between these two?

Future Retro Orb might fit your bill.

But Thomann.de ships to the US and carries MFB.

I don't know of any others in that price range, but I like the build quality of the Dark Time a lot more than the MFB.

one thing to consider however is eurorack. the Make Noise Renee at $500 USD is an amazing sequencer with a lot of capabilities, including a built in quantizer and touch interface. if you get a Tip Top Happy Ending rack, it only comes out to $650 total. (*you may need to get a separate clock source though)

if you go this route, you can even plan to expand your system by adding Pressure Points.

also, don't rule out 8-step sequencers. I think 16-step is actually overrated and often it's more useful to have 8 x 2 to be able to control the timing separately on each. it depends on the kind of music you make, but usually a looping 8-step is actually enough. I even use 4 steps a lot.

Doepfer MAQ 16/3 & Regelwerk both have MIDI and CV/Gate. I think Regelwerk is discontinued, but the MAQ is still available.

I would second the Orb recommendation. It is a pretty sweet sequencer. The layout is different, and changing pitch isnt as easy on it as your normal analog sequencer, which means it is mroe of a programming tool than it is a tweak as you go type. Dont get me wrong, it would be great for live use, and the remix function is really awesome. The only downfall so far as I have noticed is that it can only control one instrument via CV at a time. You can control one via midi simultaneously, but its the same pattern as the source being controlled by CV. The price however, makes up for this immensely. 550 is a good deal for the unit IMO and two costs about the same as most decent analog sequencers. The slight nuances of controls are replaced with storage capacity, which is wonderful. 16 banks of 16 patterns and then a song storage option as well? Kind of difficult not to consider it as a useful addition to your setup...

I have two Orbs, and I love using them with my Xpander. I tend to set voices 1,2, and 3 to different patches as 4, 5, and 6 for some really interesting sequences.

Anyway, def look into it.

I have no complaints about a mobius, and if you can wait, you can probably find one for around $400 used...

I used to have a Mobius. The programming style became to tedious for what I was trying to do. But of course it was still a great piece of gear! Looking for more of a "of the moment" thing.

using the term analog 'style' doesn't help your cause, i think

for one, the Orb and mobius are both totally digital sequencers with an added MIDI-CV converter output.
if you want analog sequencing, FR isn't such.
You might as well use a Cirklon, Zeit, Octopus or P3 with a MIDI-CV converter if you want tops in that class of sequencer. MAQ 16/3 falls in that class as well.

i reckon your best bet is to use a MIDI-CV convertor for clock-sync, and then sequence from a modular which gives the widest range of true analog sequencer options. that's what i have and it's great in many many ways that are unforseeable until experienced. Google 'flame clockwork', for example.

barring that rather pricey proposition, there's the Dark Time(affordable), the Oberkorn 3x16(cheap!), ARP $equencer, and the MFB 'zweg's (cheap!!) to choose from.

also the Detachment3 ARCHANGEL is shaping up to be a doozy.

That thing looks ridiculous. Is there anymore information about it yet? Other than the sight linked that is?
