First hard synth advice

Post by sourgrass » Sat Jun 02, 2012 4:44 pm

Hiya, so I'm looking into buying my first hardware synth, ideally analog. I've done a bit of work with software synths, so I feel like I have a decentish understand of how subtractive synthesis works for a beginner. I primarily play ambient/drone, krautrock/kosmische, and noise-related kinda stuff. I have a glut of effects I use for guitar processing that I plan to run the synth through, so onboard effects are not a big concern. I really dig stuff like Steve Hauschildt's most recent album, Motion Sickness of Time Travel, Sundrips, etc.

I'm particularly interested in the Dave Smith Mopho keyboard right now, partially because I know that Rachel Evans from Motion Sickness of Time Travel uses one and partially based on the demos I've seen. The Tetra is more appealing, but I'd need to get a controller of some sort then, and I'd like to keep this just at or under $1,000.

What other synths should I be looking into? Would the Mopho keyboard or the Tetra with a cheapish controller be a good investment for now?

Thanks in advance! :)

Wait a couple of weeks til the Minibrute comes out and get it as well as a Doepfer Dark Energy. Comes in around $1000 and you get two very nice analogue synths, one of which has a keyboard.

I have a Tetra, it sounds good but it's about as inspiring to use as a softsynth. I'd much much rather something with a good knob-per-function interface, even without patch storage.

Minibrute is a solid choice. A Mopho isnt bad, as long as you get a keyboard version.

That does sound quite appealing. Thanks!

The nice thing about the dave smith synths is, lots of patch storage, intuitive user interface, and 16 x 4 step sequencer built in. The MoPho is alot of synth for the money, and the Mono Evolver is a step up, with 2 analog oscillators, and 2 digital wavetable oscillators, and even more front panel control. On top of all that, they sound great, and have extensive modulation sections. I've owned a MoPho kb for several years, just sold it to a band-mate, and got the mono Evolver. I miss the sub-oscillators on the little guy, but with an extra 4 modulation slots, besides the 4 LFO's they both have, I'm still having a blast with it. Just throwing this out there.

Yeah, the sequencer and patch storage would both be really useful for me, and my recording and performance processes are both totally tied to my computer anyway, so that's not a huge deal.
