Eurorack rack-mountable cases

Post by nuromantix » Sun Jul 01, 2012 12:04 pm

I've got a couple of the 6U Analogue Systems ones that are full, I need another one for Doepfer stuff.
I can't see a Doepfer-made 6U case that has rack ears.....
can anyone recommend a decent 6U case that is rackable, with Doepfer-type power.
I'm in the UK so things made in UK/Europe are going to be better value for me than AMerican stuff.

Thanks!

a-100g6, GorillaCage, Modular World EcoRack, or just make your own.

Thanks, guess I'll just go for the Doepfer one.
The Doepfer website is so 1995..... hard to find stuff on there :)

The Analogue Systems site isn't much better. It's like they didn't bother hiring some pro web designer, they'll just spend money on making awesome modules instead.

What's the contents of your AS racks btw?

I have one too.

3xRS-95 VCO
RS-200 step sequencer (got it for $300 on ebay!!)
RS-340 gate delay (for the sequencer mostly)
RS-150 sequential switch
RS-110 multimode filter
RS-120 comb filter (best analog filter EVER, man this thing is noisy)
RS-280 freq. divider
RS-420 octave controller
RS-380 modulation controller
RS-140 MIDI/CV converter
2xRS-60 envelopes
2x RS-165 signal mixers
RS-20 ring modulator

Can't imagine how huge this system would been if they were old Moog modules :D
Had to get a new 6U rack just too get the sequencer in there, it takes up half a rack on its own!

Still some empty space at the bottom of rack#2

I really need a quantizer too, it's a pain to fine tune every step of the sequencer to exact notes. You hear it so well if one step is just slightly flat or sharp. Another problem is that when I run it through the seq.switch (that let you combine the 3x8 in 1x16 or 1x24 steps) the pitch drops so I have to retune all of them again if I forget to use it the first time around.

Of course you could just use a MIDI sequencer and forget about the entire sequencer, but where's the fun in that? :)

The octave controller is a great utility module too. Doesn't do anything interesting other than giving you +/- 2 octave step knobs for 3 VCO's and a slew control for portamento, so you don't have to fine tune the oscillators just to drop or step up octaves.
It's hooked in right after the MIDI/CV module so the VCO pitch CV's run out from that. Also has an overall pitch tune for all VCO's. It also has an extra CV input that lets me control all 3 VCO's with the sequencer with one cable.

I started with a pre-made AS-15 6U case filled with basic modules, and added more in the second case when I got the sequencer and had lots of spare room. It's still far from filled up, didn't spend any money on it in a couple years.

I highly recommend Doepfer for control stuff - sequential switch, quantiser etc all work with no problems and are cheap.

Yeah, I'm thinking of adding some Doepfer stuff, they have alot of fun modules too. The deopfer power cables have no issue with the AS case?

And regarding the MP3's on your site, we have a rather similar setup, so it gave me lots of fun ideas to try out on my own.

I usually try to write down the knob settings and cable routings in notepad when I cook up a really awesome sound.
Almost impossible to recreate them later though, you get in the same ballpark and have to tweak some.
Sometimes I make a patch that is simply so awesome I don't want to remove the cables, so I leave it there for 3 weeks! When you crank up the resonance on the comb filter you get these amazing delay and feedback effects.

I've been curious to how different the Moog-ish lowpass filter is to my multimode filter.

Only problem with using Doepfer stuff in AS cases is that the holes are drilled in a different place so you end up with a tiny gap, or else you have to cut the rails in the case to make it all fit together. Not major though. As far as I remember, you need to put a half twist in the power cables or something, email AS and they will tell you about using Doepfer modules in their cases. You might need a special power cable, I forget. It's ages since I changed anything around.

The filters are not hugely different in my opinion but I'm not someone who obsesses over those kind of details, I just get on with making music. I've never sat and compared them.
