Buying a New Synth

So I'm a complete beginner to synths and I want to buy one that would cater to my needs. I want a synth that is hands on and will allow me to understand what changes what. The type of music I'm going for is soft and downtempo-esq, like Thrupence, Evenings, Bonobo, kid kanevil, Daisuke Tanabe, Teebs, Four Tet, Boards of Canada... That type of sound. My price range is anywhere under $800
