Looking a very simple pad synth software for Windows

Hi everyone,

I’ve resorted to asking for help here because I’ve searched and searched online for software to fit my needs but everything I find seems to be over complicated for what I’m looking for.

I basically want a piece of software (preferably free) that I can digitally create very simple synth chords and export as mp3 or similar, to use as backing tracks for a new project. In my mind I envisage something with a digital keyboard where I can play and record the notes I want, and select/edit the sound to create just a very simple soft pad synth sound. As mentioned, everything I’ve found so far is way above my knowledge and it’s much too complex for the simple use I require!

As a reference the sound I’d be looking for is something similar to the pad synth chords (not the lead melody) played at the beginning of the song “Stay Safe” by Rhye.

That's two things- a sequencer aka DAW to record what you do on the keyboard, and a synthesizer plugin. Reaper and TAL Noisemaker. Or AIR Music Tech XPand!2, and/ or Loom. Or GreenOak Crystal. All have good presets along the lines of what you're looking for, and are easy to tweak (well ok maybe Crystal and Loom are a little more complex but both are very cool).

Or an Apple device with Garageband.

Or learn keyboard. The chords in that Rhye song are really really easy to play on an actual keyboard. MicroKorg or Novation MiniNova are real simple and sound great.

Thank you so much! I’ve downloaded Reaper and TAL Noisemaker and it’s the perfect combination for what I’m looking for.

I understand I could easily play simple chord progressions on a physical keyboard but I didn’t mention I’m just looking something to create and control from my laptop while I play electric guitar over the top.

Anyway, thanks so much again for your help that’s absolutely exactly what I was looking for!
