where are totally free softsynths?

Post by t3hsd » Wed May 16, 2007 4:30 am

I've been looking fr a totally free software synthesizer or softdrumachine of any kind for a mac
the thing is i dont have any of those parent programs like cubase or reaktor for plugins to work
is there any way i can get something for free without having to pay for the plugin to work
I have absolutely no money left to spend on those.
thanks if you can help!

see now, there's your problem right there.

I bet there is a free VST host for Mac, but I don't know of one.

have you googled "free mac vst host" yet?

oh, wait a minute; can you mac people even use VST's, or does it have to be Audio Units or somesuch?

you're better off asking here: bigbluelounge.com. or risk more answers such as the one above.

Yeah there are Mac VSTs as well as Audio Units. I'm going to guess he just means 'softsynths' rather than VSTs specifically.

There's actually an Audio Unit host that comes with every Mac (at least with 10.4, not sure about earlier ones) you install it by clicking on the developer tools (or something) tab when you install the OS, it's not part of the standard installation. I can't for the life of me remember what it's called though. While I find out go download all the ones mentioned in Mitch's thread, especially Automat and daHornet.

Awesome, I'm going to give this a go for sure....

I was going to suggest LinPlug FreeAlpha, it's a simple 2/4 osc subtractive soft synth. I got it on a dvd with MusicTech Mag a while ago, and it's not bad. Nowhere near as advanced as crystal though.

There's also the "MiniMogue" which is a virtual recreation of the MiniMoog, and you can get it for free from

First of all you're trying to install a Windows plugin on a Mac, second you're trying to use a plugin with Garageband. Garageband doesn't host plugs, you've just got what it comes with.

then how am i supposed to use these things?
I also cant figure out why im getting forewarded to plugins
I dont have any host programs to run VSTs or AU
if i havent yet mentioned that, take it into account
Unless you can direct me to a free download to a host program, they will do me no good
soo it looks like im stuck at the start again

Do you have a newer Macintosh? It should have the Garageband software synthesizer.
