Software sampler?

Post by frequency » Thu Oct 04, 2007 11:07 am

Can someone explain me what exactly I need to install on my Imac to be able to sample like you would on a hardware sampler?

I looked into MachFive and Reaktor, but they only seem to 'treat' samples rather than 'sample' audio input?!

I always used hardware up until now, so I'm green behind my ears when it comes to software!

(Recording-Type) sampling isn't really done like it was done with hardware. With computers, you just record the audio, edit it, and then load it into the "sampler" software.

To do the recording, you could use an audio editor software or even a DAW (digital audio workstation) software (otherwise known as multitrack software or sequencer--with audio support).

For the recording, it's nice to have the recording resolutions that are available to your soundcard. So 24bit & 96kHz (or 192kHz) recording formats are great, although 16bit 44.1kHz can be just fine for some things. A great many people like to record at 24bit 44.1kHz as a nice medium between hi res and lower res. Of course the sampler software has to be able to play the format too, so that's another thing to consider.

Basically, you'll be dealing with .WAV and/or AIFF files.

Couple of others softsamplers that actually record:

The late & great Arguru's DirectWave (bought & distrubuted by Image Line now)
kl.'s Soundberg
Devine Machine's OneShotRecorder & LiveSyncRecorder (which aren't reall fully fledged samplers, but anyway...)

Id reccomend using the free audio editor Audacity.

But really shouldnt all software samplers record.

Not really. When you're using it as a standalone app, maybe. But when I'm working inside a DAW, I just record into the DAW...
