Software ROMplers?

Post by Hugo76 » Sat May 17, 2008 12:30 am

Are there any ROMpler software progs? I mean, most seem to be either VA, Wavetable synthesis or similar.
Are there any software versions of, for instance the Korg Triton?

The thing that seems to come close is the Halion One plugin which apparently has borrowed sampling material from the Motif.

On the other hand, hardware companies know very well that software can be duplicated easily. Their sampling libraries are a considerable investment in time, money and effort. When you'd put that in software, you'd lose potential customers for the hardware (because they'd just download a cracked copy).

I once made a mock-up of a Korg Triton VST back in 2005. (an April fool's joke that kind of got out of hand). After 5 minutes I had 10 people begging me for a download or a cracked version.

See http://www.365mag.com/index.php?pg=news&recnum=4503 and http://www.idiomag.com/peek/30420/korg who copied it straight from http://www.gearjunkies.com/news_info.php?news_id=2802

Anyway, to answer your question:

there's EW Colossus, Luxonix Ravity/Purity, IK Multimedia SampleTank and Cakewalk Dimension Pro.

Not excactly a hardware Rompler -turned software, but check out Dimension Pro from Cakewalk. That thing has become my new favorite!! It has a great selection of orchestral sounds as well as your bread and butter pianos, bass, guitar, Wurli/Rhodes sounds. The library isn't huge in megabytes (some 3 gigs), but it has ALOT of programs/presets, and most of them sound great. It also has some very good synth pads and leads to choose from.

Edit: Oh, and yeah, there are alot of expansion packs available for it now, including most of the E-mu Proteus 2000 line of sounds! (Proteus, Xtreme Lead, Mo'PHatt, Earth, Virtuoso and more)

The Korg Legacy Collection includes VSTs of the M1 and Wavestation.

Also take a look at Emulator X2 by E-mu. It's a great sampler that ships with the complete Protues 2000 soundset + a bunch of other sounds.
If you're in Europe, Thomann are having a blowout sale right now:

About 300 euros cheaper than the original list price, I guess it's because of v3 coming out soon.

Yeah, I actually have this one. And I'll most likely upgrade to mk3 asap. The Xtractor function seems quite cool, but is it as cool as Malodyne's DNA? ;)
Thanks for the tip on the reFX, also btw.

To clarify; what I'm after is not necessarilly reproduction of bread and butter sounds, but rather the possibilty to manipulate different layers of any given patch. Typically a patch would be built up by 4 elements, as in Yamaha's or Rolands architecture, or 2 in Korgs prog mode (although layered together with several 'progs' in combi-mode)).

Rapture will give up to 6 elements to play with, it's great for a non standard sound.

Wow, that one sounds definately cool. Might be worth investing in.

There is Steinberg Hypersonic2 too. Good sounds, really easy to set multi sound with a great "link layers" button.

There are Pianoes, Ep, Orchestral, analogs lead and pad, drumkits... and so on...

It's the vst more close to a rompler I saw.

Wusikstation is a good one. There's a fully functional free version that comes with the Computer Music magazines and the full version is $99 I think. Comes with a huge library of sounds and presets. It does wavesequencing, has lots synth-like sound-mangling options, or you can just use it as straight ahead sample playback instrument if you like.

There's also Yellow Tools Independence (I think they have a free version), Plugsound, and Sampletank, but I don't have any experience with these.

If you want to go really cheap, get the free sfz player and load up on lots of free soundfonts.

quantum leap goliath is like the massive library korg and such wished they could fit into their mediocre-sized ROM cards.

There's also NI Kontakt, which a lot of people use for sample based things, and CronoX from linplug, which can really manipulate the samples.

I'll second wusikstation, however, there's quite a bit of drama going down as the author has decided to make it a subscription software-as-a-service thing.
This was only recently announced, so we'll see how it plays out.
If it ends in tears, definitely check out one of the companies that have products built on the wusik engine. Their sampleset will be tailored rather than generalized, and the VST skin'd, but you are still able to load up wusikSND banks and samples.

So basically, you buy a sampler plugin, and that becomes your ROMpler. You don't ever have to sample, just buy third party libraries.

NI Kompakt/ Kontakt are well supported, all the best libraries are in that format, so I would think it's the most future proof. Wusik looks to me like it's going to be gone in a year or two, with only 600 users.
