Best Reverb Plug-in?
I'm looking for some recommendations for some good reverb plugins. I've been using the reverb plugin in FL Studio mostly (Fruity Reverb), and I don't really like the sound.
Anyone have any good ones?

Re: Best Reverb Plug-in?
I haven't heard a convolution reverb I haven't liked (though they tend to be a lot more CPU intensive than synthesized reverbs). Altiverb is a good one; I've heard raves about SIR (and it's free!), but I can't speak from experience as I'm a Mac user.
I'm pickier about synthesized reverbs--to my ears, a lot of them sound a bit like a conglomeration of discreet echos and impart kind of a limp, phasey sound to the material. My favorites by far are in Reaktor (which of course require you to own the expensive software)--the off-the-shelf Spacemaster reverb is good; the user-made Native Yardstick and Laserbrew are brilliant. I'm afraid I haven't used too many others that really do it for me.

"Sure that's fine in practice, but what about in theory?"

Audio damage makes a great one called Reverence
I use it on nearly every track

No one cares, no one sympathizes,
so you just stay home and play synthesizers.

Re: Best Reverb Plug-in?
I use McDSP Revolver and TL Labs TL Space the most, but I'm on Pro Tools so that won't really help you. They're both convolution reverbs so they're really CPU intensive and they have a particular kind of sound which is different to normal algorithmic reverbs.
I find there's something about software reverbs, I haven't really used too many good ones. The reverb in Live is pretty decent if it's set to the highest quality, but a lot of software reverbs seem to sound quite flat and two-dimensional IMO, which isn't really what you want from a reverb.

What about good hardware modules?
I haven't been able to find a good one to run vocals or synths through.
I found an Alesis Quadraverb at my local pawn shop, but that's about it :/

I find my TC M-One is good enough to use on recordings. I'd love to have something a bit more fancy though...

I mostly use CSR from IK Multimedia but occasionally also Logic's Space Designer, the spring reverb in Amplitube and Reaktor.

Re: Best Reverb Plug-in?
With regards to software, I use SIR 1 - it isn't the most advanced convolution programme out there, it's getting old, but it is free and it certainly sounds good. I use a rackmount TC Electronic M350 which gives good results, but for a more 'effected' sound I feel (i.e. it sounds more like a reverb, rather than an actual acoustic space). The Live reverb is okay for certain things (good long reverb time) but it doesn't have quite the density of a convolution or the sheen of the M350; OTOH it's certainly easy on the CPU.
Reverbs are a little funny - you can think one sounds fine, and then you try something else, and the first doesn't quite match up to it. It can be tempting just to look at the ones with loads of features; I'd specifically recommend against this - pre-delay and decay are the main controls you need, EQ can be added after the effect (actually pre-delay can also be added before, so...). Reverbs are so much about 'character' rather than sheer quality, so it's quite difficult to give an unbiased opinion - this thread has already shown that no two people have recommended the same one!

Re: Best Reverb Plug-in?
I second Reverence. Audio Damage makes some really sweet plug ins. There all really cheap ($29-49) and they are just superb. All very original and unique. What is cool about Reverence is that it's modeled off the old 80's digital "plate" reverbs. Your able to add just a little bit of presence or just massacre the sound if you want.

EQ on the tail? You'd have to use an FX send in that case. I find that being able to EQ the tail itself (and not the dry signal) is basically the only way to go for me.Alex Hamilton wrote:EQ can be added after the effect
I think I can sort of hear the "shot" on a lot of impulses when I've been trying out SIR. At least by using headphones.

I'm with them. I use reverence like nobody's business, especially on drums.synth3tik wrote:I second Reverence. Audio Damage makes some really sweet plug ins.
