VST filters - Who's got the best Filter plugin?

Post by bizdavis » Fri May 08, 2009 3:26 pm

For years I've been using a freeware filter plugin called Topaz to do my basic HPF/LPF/BPF filter effects in Cubase (if there's not a filter on the synth / sampler already)... sounds nice on samples / soft synths....but it's started to seem really thin with the heavier synths I've been recording live.

Commercial or freeware, what are you guys using as filters in VST / Ableton?

(Hardware recommendations always welcome too!)

I'm mostly using Runciter from the Uhbik bundle and the Legacy MS-20fx plugin.

http://www.uhbik.com/

I also own Tone2 Filterbank 3 but probably gonna sell it soon, so if anybody is interested it's up for grabs.

I like the lofi character of Volcano, myself. The interface isn't bad either. It actually sounds better than my Electrix Filter Factory.
I am no longer in pursuit of vintage synths. The generally absurd inflation from demand versus practical use and maintenance costs is no longer viable. The internet has suffocated and vanquished yet another wonderful hobby. Too bad.

http://kunz.corrupt.ch/?Products:VST_Multi_Filter

I don't know how it compares to the hundreds of other freeware filter plugins available, but at least their soft synths (Uno 62, TAL-Elek7ro) have been well received.

If you want to spend money, try this:
http://www.fabfilter.com/products/volcano.php

I have only used the FabFilter One vsti, but the filter on that is pretty good, so maybe the quality translates to their other products too... try the demo

Runciter & Filterscape here. I tend to rely on Live's Auto Filter for basic tasks as well.

Runciter, Filterscape, and Quad Frohmage here. Quad Frohmage is probably my fav for more traditional filter effects, filterscape for the crazy morphing filters and filtered delays, and runciter for a really grungy distortion/filter combo.

Korg Legacy Analog Edition MS20 FX. Best virtual filter I've ever come across. Besides that Logic and Live's filter plug-ins do me just fine.
Korg M3 (Fully Loaded), Blofeld Keyboard, MPC 2500 LE, (Monomachine), Logic Studio 8, Live 6, FM8, Absynth 4, Predator, Alpha3, Korg Legacy Collection, (Shioitor), Drumazon, Nepheton, Stylus RMX

If you haven't used the Sonalksis TBK1 Creative Filter (http://www.sonalksis.com/index.php?section_id=102), you are really missing out.

No one has the "best" per say , however I love :

Ohm Force - Quadfohrmage http://www.ohmforce.com/ViewProduct.do?p=QuadFrohmage
Waldorf - D-pole http://www.waldorfmusic.de/en/products/waldorf-edition + it comes with attack !
Schwa Oligarc http://www.stillwellaudio.com/?page_id=39 (demo never expires =D> )
and of course the MS20fx , but you already have that
Some wish to leave their mark ... I want to leave a scar .
