Good Modern String Synthesis

Post by Rawrasaur » Sun Sep 20, 2009 8:54 pm

Anyone know good softsynths that produce relatively natural sounding strings? I'm also looking for good synth horn sounds. Not samples mind you, just synths.

Applied Acoustic's String Studio & Ugo's M-Theory (formerly String Theory) and GForce's Virtual String Machine (this one's sample based, though) might be of interest.

FM8

Yes I know it gets boring ^^

See if you can find something in here: http://www.youtube.com/user/mvsmsx

-> Twin Peaks, Second Rendezvous: acoustic horns
-> Chariots of Fire, 1492: synthy horns
"You know I love you, CS, but this is bullshit." (Automatic Gainsay)

The GForce Virtual String Machine is actually quite good. I was very happy to see that the Polymoog strings were included as well. I arranged some classical music with the VSM in a youtube video. The patch is raw/unfiltered with a little reverb and compression.

I have and really enjoy AAS' String Studio. It can produce very natural sounding strings, slightly synthetic strings, the sounds of an old string synth, and... strangeness by mixing things you ordinarily wouldn't.

My favorite subject!

Z3ta2 can do an incredible job with both strings and brass. The advantage is all those oscs/lfos and waveforms to play with and of course PWM. The factory patches will give you a taste of both, but you can really get deep with all the options Z3ta has on tap. I know that a lot of people consider it a 'Trance synth' because of it's arp and multi saw abilities, but there's a whole nuther world of creativity there. It's not 'just' a trance synth. It's a desert island synth.

The Jupiter 8V is far less versatile, but it does fantastic (to ma anyway) strings and brass. Together, these two will do beautiful things. I considered the VSM from GForce, and it does sound fantastic. But the Z/J8V combo will give me pretty much everything the VSM will, or at least solidly cover that ground, if not nail it exactly.

Added info....
Blue Cat's free pack has some pretty good phasers/flange/chorus that will also be beneficial to string quests. I've also read that the Valhalla (they of reverb fame) UberMod is another tool for string synth sound affectionadios that's extremely useful. Bootsy's ThrillseekerLA makes for a great string comp and it's saturator adds some interesting color.

I don't have the link handy, but Sound On Sound's Synth Secrets articles have some outstanding info on String machine sounds, synth strings, brass and more. VERY much worth studying for reproducing those tones.

Then if you want to get really crazy. add in LUCEifer, the Polymoog VST emu, layer some Vox Humana and you will haZ a tingly ;)
