I've got one of the infamous yamaha qx-7 midi sequencers and since tape drives are hard to find and the cable to connect to the two are even harder to find, I'm trying to figure out a means of backing up midi data via my pc. Just so you guys know the qx-7 is capable of recording input from multiple midi channels on each track (theres a whopping two tracks). Any free software out there that would work in this instance? All I want to do is record the out put the qx7 via its midi out, and then rerecord the midi info later on via its midi in. I know hardware sequencers are pretty cheap, but I don't have the cash right now and I've actually grown to like the qx-7 step input.

Do you mean recording the actual MIDI sequence data? Any free MIDI sequencer for your computer will do the job assuming you have a MIDI interface.
You used to be able to get the cassette cable at Radio Shack but I'm sure it's no longer available. It was used by a few manufacturers...Casio used it on the CZ3000/5000, Radio Shack used it on the TRS80 computers. I'm sure if you google you can locate some info on the wiring on teh netz.

I just tried this with reaper and anvil studio, both record the data, but it plays back the data with an occasional glitch.

If you can get the cassette cable you can just use any MP3 player that can record to record and playback the "cassette dumps". Apparently.
