Is Novation's automap feature any good?
I was just checking out the nocturne and I always find that programming the controllers to sync with your computer is a PAIN. I've never been able to get my nanokontrol to do what I want.
I'm using logic and reason with a ton of plugins. Also curious if it could control my micron through my computer, or a DSI tetra or mopho.

Automap is very nice. It's a cool and fast solution for mapping midi controllers. I do recommend the nocturn.

Im controlling my Mopho through the Nocturn. It works like a charm, except the Mopho doesn't have any CC parameters for LFO.

How does it work with a hardware synth? Is there some kind of computer editor that you use to build map files for hardware synths?
Switches, knobs, buttons, LEDs, LCD screens, monitors, keys, mice, jacks, sockets. Now two joysticks!

Yes, and if the synth has knobs it can record the knobs.

I'd recommend M-Audio Axiom Pro models with build in hypercontrol, all parameters are preprogramed, the keys are great for playing.Logic loves it as well as pro tools.

Automap is very nice, I use it with a Novation SL Zero to control a Juno alpha (and soon a JX-8P) and various softsynts.
The basic editor is used to make standalone synth templates so you can control a synth without even a computer (you can program a CCs, NRPN, sysex template, and infact you can do it on the Remote itself since it has nice displays).
Automap on the other side is another piece of software used to bridge between the controller and software resident on the pc so every parameter of a softsynth is sent automatically to controller with his name and ranges. The funky thing is getting a vst that controls your hardware (ctrlr.org) and automapping it so you can tweak real knobs and have the values synched on harware and on vst (for automation purposes)

Automap isn't as innovative as it was 4-5 years ago(?), most controllers + DAW have some kind of midi learn function.
I really like the Novation products, but the Nocturn is in my world useless, it's impossible to tweak fast and correct making it nearly worthless in LIVE situations (I've also tried using it with Traktor).
Just some thoughts

I personally didn't like automap. It made my mac crash consistently until I uninstalled it. And now all is well again.

I didn't like automap, mainly because I could do everything without automap, and it just got in my way till I disabled it
