New JX-8P inspired VSTi!

Post by D-Collector » Wed Mar 02, 2011 2:44 pm

That actually sounds like a JX-8P! Found it in a thread over at KVR. Good work by the creator so far, can't wait for the final version. Check it out:

Wow, that's got to be a photograph or scan or something. I like the values are listed under the sliders, but small so they don't interfere. Wonder if it sounds as good as she looks.

Woah! I used to own a JX8P once upon a time so I have just now tried it out. After boosting the 1khz EQ range +4-5 db with a fairly wide band, this took me right back to those days! It sounds very authentic. Love those pads and bells! The author did a splendid job.

Watch the CPU load, though. I have a quad-core Q6600 and the performance meter in Reaper still hits up to 7% just by this plugin. That's twice as much as Arturia JP8V!!
I am no longer in pursuit of vintage synths. The generally absurd inflation from demand versus practical use and maintenance costs is no longer viable. The internet has suffocated and vanquished yet another wonderful hobby. Too bad.

Yes, I got some cpu overload from this too, but he is not finished and will adress it. And in time I hope for a much better looking interface.

I tried this out last week A/B with my actual JX-8P and it's VERY close in how it copies the parameters from my hardware to reproduce the sound. A little tweaking was sometimes needed to get it more of a copy. And it did actually sound pretty good, it gave the JX sound. I have one patch I programmed on the 8P that has a very long filter env that fades over time with little harmonics and filtery swells rising up now and then as it all fades, I programmed it into the software and it was 95% there. It did however sound more plastic and harsh but in a mix it may be hard to tell (esp with effects and EQ) so a good job. 8P probably isn't the hardest to emulate, sounding somewhat digital in places as it is, but I was suprised how accurate the mapping between hard and soft was. I could live with just the VST if I 'needed' the 8P sound, but I still prefer the synth cos it feels nice and is warmer and not quite as fake sounding.

I'd say it sounds closer to it's real life counterpart than the JX-3P VST I tried out a few years ago (which could approximate the sound but it lacked all the filter loveliness and tone, took only the 'superficial' aspect of the 3P but without it's nuanced tone that I love; the 3P always sounded more 'analog' to me vs the 8P anyway, so harder to get right in software perhaps)

Good job with the software though.

Oh I see he's updated it? The version I have didn't have the aftertouch/portamento/keymode controls etc - it may be improved over what I heard (which was already fairly decent).

Great sound. CPU load is a bit high (around 19% in SAVIHOST on my Athlon II X4 @3.0GHz), but I really like this synth.

I'd say that some of the patches sound even better than the real thing when the chorus is on.

Version 1.0 is ready! Seems more CPU friendly, at least on my pc. And it sounds wonderful. A worthy replacement for the JX-8P. Great work mr. Lueders!

I sold my JX-8P in 2009 because I felt it had really crappy build quality. It was well taken care of and all but everytime I moved it the thing kept warping and bending. I hate that. Wood bottom and plastic casing -how can you go wrong... I absolutely loved the sound though so this VST has hit the spot. I have also managed to get good JX sounds from PoiZone.

I can't speak for it's JX8P ness , but sounds very close to the alpha and runs very well in VFX ....so win !
