low cost DAW for mainly recording HW w/some vst use too
I generally use fl studio, but I am putting together a second "studio" and need a good low cost DAW. Plug-in support is a must, although good multitrack recording, editing, and ease of use are the most important features.
Reaper looks good, but I am open to other suggestions too.
Pros and cons are welcome
I run windows 7, can run xp, and linux
Also, a license that would allow use on more than computer would be cool. I would like to pay less than $100

Yep REAPER all the way. It's officially supported under wine too, so you could mess around in linux with it too.

Another vote for Reaper. It's better than almost anything else too.

Re: low cost DAW for mainly recording HW w/some vst use too
I forgot about live lite. I use fl like i said, but it has limitations when recording. I actually have a live lite disk that came with my interface.
The reason I wanted the ability to use the license on multiple computers is that I have my computer at home that I use, but I also wanted to use my girlfriends computer at her house to record because we have a few instruments that we play there. And i will just carry my interface with me. Not that thats an important detail lol.
Which of the two have better layouts and ease of use?

That's a personal choice. Nice that you can get both and try them out. I like Live for trying out ideas, but ultimately the bulk of the work gets done in a "proper" DAW.cgren72 wrote:Which of the two have better layouts and ease of use?
Re: low cost DAW for mainly recording HW w/some vst use too
Yeah i will try them both out. I tried an old version of live lite once, but didn't really like it, and thats why I didn't consider live lite an option until it was brought up again. I will most likely put live lite on my computer and Reaper on the other computer.
unless anyone has any better ideas.
thanks all

I found Cubase Elements very easy to use and competent when I did some recordings at my friends studio. Don't know if it meets all your demands, though, but maybe iy could be what you're looking for

I've heard Presonus Studio One is nice too, but I haven't used it. I use Reaper as an editor all the time though (for the things it's a pain to do in Ableton Live - where I do most of my work), it's sick.

I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.
Re: low cost DAW for mainly recording HW w/some vst use too
that looked interesting, but I saw on this chart that mp3 export is not an option. I use wav too, but I doubt it has wav
