help choosing software midi sequencer

I need some advice on what is most familiar to step sequencing on a stand alone midi sequencer (like the mc 500) or drum machine (incredibly familiar with the boss dr 202's step sequencer which I use to sequence my bass from my synths). Completely new to software, just got a good deal on a laptop + midi controller.
