Ableton Push 2

Post by Stab Frenzy » Tue Nov 03, 2015 5:44 am

This kind of came out without me noticing it, looks pretty great though. It looks like Ableton are moving towards more hardware/software integration, the improved screen on this new Push looks pretty amazing to me. The price is fairly big though, don't know about the rest of the world but here it's about 60% more than the original Push, our dollar has tanked in the past year or so though.

Everything Ableton is too expensive. I'm considering switching to Bitwig.

which is a bit like saying "Everything Apple is too expensive. I'm considering switching to Linux/Android." ...which is alright for some, but nothing I'd consider doing. it's cliche and there are exceptions but often one gets what they pay for and personally I feel that Ableton (and Apple) more than justify the pricing.

anyway, this is a bit of a late response but I cannot over-stress how incredible Push 2 is. I've had the original Push since it first shipped and really liked it, often saying that if I needed to part with my studio as long as I still had Push and my MacBook I'd likely be fine (and possibly more productive). aside from the 2's display, the biggest improvement is the unit itself. the pads are so much nicer and while Push was already incredibly solid, everything about this new model feels significantly better. I'm also pleased that Ableton have brought Push's production in-house and away from Akai(InMusic)

yes, it is pricier but I did their trade-in program which knocked $300 or so off the bill and sent my old Push to a good cause. I really can't give it a higher recommendation.

Bitwig is still competing mainly on price.

Not only are they cheaper than Live 9 Standard but they are showing up in bundles (not a "light" version either). For a while you could get Bitwig bundled with an Artuira KeyLab controller plus the Analog Lab software for less than the street price of Bitwig  Which was something like 30% cheaper than Live 9 Standard and you got a controller out of it.

I do think Live is getting too expensive. Live 9 Suite now costs $200 more than Cubase Pro :?
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

Regarding switching to Bitwig because Live is too expensive, I got given a full version of Bitwig and was excited about using it because it had a lot of cool features which I was interested in and I thought were an improvement over Live, but it was so buggy I couldn't use it to make music. This was two or so years ago so they may have improved things in the mean time, but that's my experience with Bitwig. I'd love to see them do well and to push the controller integration and customisation stuff further, but at the moment you can't even compare it to Live.

I agree, you get what you pay for. I have the original push and that thing is built like a tank and makes every other synth I own feel pretty cheap. The only think I didn't like that much is how hard the pads are. If the new one is way better I must have it. I'd way rather pay a little more and get something better than the same old cheap as can be box of plastic and wiggly knobs.
