Some years later... I did end up replacing the floppy in my FZ-10M with a Gotek and it works very well. Never did get around to converting my old disks though. I'd love to hear how you went about doing it. Everything I've read says I need an internal floppy drive, not USB. Would appreciate it if you could shed some light on the process you used. Cheers!madtheory wrote: ↑Thu Dec 08, 2016 6:48 pmI can give you a tip from my own experience- don't bother! I decided not to invest any energy in the dying floppy in mine, and acquired a USB floppy drive that could read DD disks and imaged them with the HxC floppy emulator, and replaced the drive with the HxC. Previously I've had issues with the floppy drives in a TX16W and a Mirage, and got nowhere. IMO they're a precision part that is very very difficult to repair, and there's a risk of damaging valuable disks.

Re: Casio FZ1
Later in the thread someone corrected me on this- it's easy to image TX16W disks because they're MS-DOS format. So a USB floppy can read those. As you've found, a USB floppy won't read Casio disks.meatbingo wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2020 1:08 pmSome years later... I did end up replacing the floppy in my FZ-10M with a Gotek and it works very well. Ah, I see. Should have read through the thread properly! Thanks for the link. Not sure how viable these disks will be after 20+ years but it'd be nice to get them going again.madtheory wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2020 7:33 pmLater in the thread someone corrected me on this- it's easy to image TX16W disks because they're MS-DOS format. Hi,
take a look at this:
http://zine.r-massive.com/casio-fz-sampler-archive/
Utilities
Casio FZ-1 IMG2FZF v0.1
Automatically convert Casio FZ disk images (IMG & HFE) to FZF format for use with Awave Studio or the ancient ‘fzdump’ utility.
Casio FZF2IMG & FZF2HFE v0.1
Automatically convert all supplied FZF files to FZ compatible HFE and IMG disk images. Supports subfolders, and maintains original filenames (no annoying double extensions).
Only for the Casio FZ
Also Play Back Tool:
Playbacktool.zip
(26.85 KiB) Downloaded 2 times
it's an HFE file made with HxC and not the utils above because Playbacktool is not a genuine FZF file.
Thanx to Swissdoc
http://www.swissdoc.de/download/FZplayback.zip
N.B. you need an external keyboard or sequenser for recording, not the FZ keyboard.

Good news, an aftermarket display for the FZ-1 is on it's way:

Re: Casio FZ1
Hello there,
Anybody knows how can I send a Sysex message from the FZ-1 to a computer? I'm trying a Full MIDI Dump with no luck. (I got a "Time Out Error").
I would like to save the banks and voices I'm using, to recall them from my sequencer in different projects. (Not sure If I can do it though).
Thanks in advance!

Re: Casio FZ1
I am trying to recover my old FZ1 samples from my old 3.5" floppys... but I don't have an FZ1 any more....
I've managed to create IMG files (using Kryoflux) and any that were stored as FZF should be able to be converted with IMG2FZF so I can then use Awave to convert to something I can thence use in my other samplers...
BUT - I a few of them I think I stored as FZV or FZB and thus I can't find a way of loading them into Awave as they are 'stuck' in an IMG. I can convert these to HFE but that still doesn't help as I have no way of reading them
has anyone found a way ?
or if anyone has an FZ1/10/20 could you try if I gave you an HFE file ? (and then save as FZF so I can then convert in Awave....)
many thanks !
related thread is here for anyone interested...

Re: Casio FZ1
I'm searching for a disk named "Hard Disk Operator" for the Casio FZ20M sampler but I don't seem to find anything on the net.
Perhaps someone has it?
Without this disk I don't think I'm able to use a SCSI hard drive with my FZ20M

Re: Casio FZ1
I have been offered a FZ-10M recently.
Evrything seems working fine aside from that i find mic input (on the front panel), output a very low level.
I can't sample anything from it without having it a max level, with the play volume at max and even though, i barely can hear anything (it does work as i can hear what i sample but it's just very very low). I have been using this microphone (Beta58) with other samplers without issue.
I'm yet to try the XLR input on the back of the unit but wonder if anyone having same experience and/or if it's normal as per FZ specs.
Thanks

Re: Casio FZ1
If it's a good price, and FZ10M is nice to have. I would much prefer it to the FZ-1.
The XLR on the back is a line output, not a mic input.
It's a TRS jack input for the mic on the front panel. Looking at the schematic, it is electronically balanced. So three questions for you to answer:
1. Are you certain that your XLR to jack cable or adapter is wired correctly?
2. Is it a TRS not a TS jack?
3. Does the same cable work in other mic jack inputs of similar impedance? It's 10kΩ.

Re: Casio FZ1
Thanks for your reply, i was not notified.
FZ10m actually offers both XLR Mixed output & XLR Mic Input on the back.
I'm pretty sure the cable is not the culprit as it working find with my other samplers.
However when installing the Gotek i saw a small daughterboard installed just on the back of the frontpanel mic input. So i'll probably start recaping those and see if that help.
Overall i'm very happy with it.
Raw waveforms paired with filters are just great.

Re: Casio FZ1
Oh right. Dunno how I missed that. So there is the same problem with the XLR mic input on the back?
