The first thing you sampled

Actually the first thing I tried to sample was thunders and I failed miserably.
The dynamic range was so huge that the audio clipped even when I had the record gain way down.
I ended up having a wet microphone and some cool rain samples that i used in some early tracks.

aside from the sk-1 burp - 19 radios configured in a circle with a microphone going through about 7 pedals in the middle of the circle, which was then blended with the Friday the 13th video game theme.

man, talk about removing the learning curve.. ha.. Was the game volume controlled by hand, or with a remote?

It was with an sp202, and I would plugin some audioline splitter from radioshack into the headphone out on my tv one signal went to my stereo while the other went into the 202. The source was a dvd filled with cheesy horror movie trailers from 60s to the 80s. The levels were always f**k up, and I had no idea how to get different tempos to mash up.
Fun times. Eventually I got sick of this and started sampling bits and pieces using soundforge. Spent way too much time chopping audio in that damn program before throwing it onto the 202

I don't remember now, even though I remember getting my Motif XS and installing DIMMs in it.

I know I got a few of my cats' meows into it, and a purr or two, but only one of my cats. The others would run away as soon as I got the microphone near them.

The next thing I did was load a bunch of Halloween sound effects WAV files I had on my 'puter. Used them in a Halloween CD I made in '07.

I beat boxed into the SK-1 (OK...I might have done a raspberry into it first) then I plugged it into my RadioShack mixer and sampled a beat from some record from my Technics SL-D2, eventually I discovered the tuning trim pot on the bottom of the SK-1 and I wired a larger trim pot on the end of a wire and taped to the top of the SK-1, it looked kind of ghetto but it allowed me to change the pitch.

My very, very first sampler was one of those Boss Digital Delay half-rack boxes, which could sample about 1 sec in lo-fi. The memory was volatile so to use the one and only sample live, I had to carry an old mono cassette player around and sample the sound before the gig! I could trigger it via a filtered sawtooth wave patch from the Juno 60. The first sound I sampled on that was the Fairlight Orch5 hit from an Art of Noise LP. Does anybody remember what Boss delay model this was? DD something?

My first proper sampler was a SCI Prophet 2002 rack. I got it for £400 in September 1990 from a second-hand music shop down in Brixton. It came with a few useless floppies; I didn't know where to get 3rd party samples for it (this was before the Internet) and I really wasn't creative enough so it went back to the same shop 4 months later for less than half the price I'd bought it for. I do remember sampling the first sound heard on the extended version of "One Small Day" by Ultravox, from the Lament CD, i.e. Midge Ure singing "ooh-one".

sat my sp202 down right in front of the speaker, rewound the tape to the part i wanted and sat there with my finger on the record button. tedious i know, but i got a lot of cool samples that way.

Makes a nice thundery sound when down pitched 2 octaves.
