WOW, this looks like the love child of a SP-606 and a SP-404.
I can't wait to find out what the price is.

I'm not that impressed. The good thing about the 404 is battery power. Obviously this is the MPC500 competitor...and no battery power.

People criticised the MPC500 for it's limited screen. I wonder how much flack Roland will get for a 3 digit LED ??? ;) ;)

many thanks!

the real time overdubbing looks pretty cool to me... have any of Roland's older SP samplers had this capability? i also like the footswitch input, which is something i wish my ESX had.

overall, i rather like it. i just wish Roland would get a clue on some age-old issues, like the lack of 1/4" inputs, and everyone's favorite, no MIDI Thru.

The thing with this is that it does not have anywhere near the capabilities of a MPC500...so you don't need a big screen. The SP series is known for its simplicity and no nonsense approach... basically a caveman method to beatmaking.

I was pumped when the sp-404 came out, as a long time sp-303 fan the new features were exciting -- batteries, massive memory, compact flash rather than s**t media, inbuilt mic etc... but the 555 looks pretty unnecessary, they kinda just seem to have added a bunch of stuff I didn't need. And I'm not a big fan of the "look" of the 404 and new 555 (as in the metal sheet over the unit) mine has just gotten dirty and scratched from gigging, they should have gone back to the sturdy and somewhat classically unattractive look of the sp-303 Dr Sample... oh well, I'll have a look at it when I see it in a shop, but the only thing that would make me that interested in a new Dr Sample would have been multi effects processor, where you can select 3 or 4 effects (with an overall of 12 nobs) so I could control several effects in real time on one loop while playing live... other than that I'll just stick to my 2 Dr Samples.

To me, the 303 is the best looking.

Looks like it would make a great first piece of gear. A sampler, rudimentary synth, usb audio interface/midi controller, sequencer in one (relatively) inexpensive unit. That is assuming everything works at least half as well as it's supposed to. I'd like to have one myself but I'm still working towards getting a 404.
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

I agree, and will add that they think djs are all 15 years old and want their samplers made by fisher price.

Maybe they just realise that the money is in making toys. Look how close to going out of business Akai keep going.

That is most likely who buys this product. There are a few hip-hop pros who use SPs... but not many. It is just smart on Rolands part.
