Akai S-612 filter?

Post by Sir Ruff » Sat Jan 05, 2008 5:01 pm

I'm sure this has been hashed to bits before, but does anyone know if this 612 filter is 12 or 24 db? It sounds MUCH better than I imagined (tho obviously you have to sample at a high enough rate to get any high freq stuff to filter!). I swear there is a slight resonant peak, unless that's just because it's 24db?

And has anyone else noticed a slight high pitched aliasing noise when the filter is turned all the way down on samples done at a lower sampling rate? It seems to appear at the 10/11 oclock mark and is kind of irritating :?
Do you even post on vse bro?

Well... sort of. David Cockerell was working at Electro-Harmonix when he designed the S-612, and the technology was then sold to Akai. Or something along those lines, I can't quite remember the details.

Sir Ruff, my X7000 has the same high-pitched noise at low cutoffs, but I generally lop off the top end in the mix anyway so it's not much of a problem.

cool, ok. good to know it's not just mine!

I've always wanted an x7000 for some reason. so clunky and big for what it does! I'd REALLY love an akai x3700... but I guess they were only ever in prototype form.

Yeah, the X7000 is sort of like a giant, heavy toy. That's what's great about it though - it's just so simple to muck around on and sounds fantastic in that unique early Akai way. Load up a string sample and it sounds like you're playing an army of 78's.

Actually, now I think about it, the S3000 family also exhibit a slight aliasing noise as cutoff is lowered, though not anywhere near the same amount. I remember getting it on a "30's Tape Piano" patch I made.

Shame that filter's nowhere near as interesting though.

AFAIK the filter is digital and 12db, I say this because when you have it really low, it really begins to alias like crazy!!!!

btw Piron, how do you like your S3000xl? I have been thinking of getting a sampler that can cover the rest of my sound, like something for the more organic sounding instruments.
