Anybody doing this?
Seems like a logical use for a portable battery powered sampler. I know from other forums that some people do use the SP404 in this role. I want to get out and do some field recording and I was thinking of using my RZ55 MD Recorder, tidying the samples up with software and dumping the samples down onto an MPC1000 to use. However if the MPC500 could be used as a better quality field recorder than the RZ55, I could remove one device (and memory storage format!) out of the chain and things would be much simpler? I was thinking of using my Rode NT1A as the microphone, I know the MPC500 + NT1A is obviously bulkier than carrying a minidisc recorder but I am willing to suffer a little if I can get better sounds.
MPC 500 Field Recording?

Re: MPC 500 Field Recording?
No, this would be silly. Seriously, the MPC500 doesn't have Phantom power for your mic...that's one hang up. You are better off using your mini disc recorder. While the 500 is small and battery powered, it isn't a field recorder.Jason13 wrote:Anybody doing this?

That's what I needed to know, BTW JS you used to have the SP404, did you ever use that in the role of field recorder? I know it's built in mic is not so hot but some people on the SP Forum have used it in that way.JSRockit wrote:No, this would be silly. Re: MPC 500 Field Recording?
I never used it that way...but it would be easier than the MPC500...just due to the simpler controls. You'd need a dynamic mic though.Jason13 wrote: That's what I needed to know, BTW JS you used to have the SP404, did you ever use that in the role of field recorder? I've done this many a time using a Shure Beta58. The results are better than you'd expect. The nice thing about it is that each empty pad is a take. So it's 120 individual samples that are automatically assigned to the pad. Great for collecting found sounds and immediately being able to sequence them. It's also good for recording stuff during jam sessions and live gigs.
