He used the CMI IIx and the Emulator 1 on Ethnicolor. It's not a factory CMI sound, so it's either his own samples (very very likely) or an Emulator.

I think there's one quite like it on the IIx CD, you have a copy of that don't you?

It also sounds to me like the choir used in Depeche Modes In Your Room - Original album version.
Emax, Emax II, Emulator, Emulator II+, Emulator III, Emulator III Rack, EIIIXP, SP12 Turbo, SP1200, E6400, E6400 Ultra, Drumulator with Pad Programmer, PPG 360 Wavecomputer, PPG Wave 2, PPG Wave 2.3, PPG EVU, PPG PRK FD, PPG Waveterm B + a lot more.

It can be recreated, reasonably, in FM8. With tons o' tweakability in addition..

I did. It wasn't one of the samples though. I reckon it's an Emulator anyway.

I decided to boot up the ol' Emulator II and load in all Choir presets I could find (which is a lot - choirs were HUGE in early/mid eighties :-)).
I found one on one of the marvelous Optical Media Solutions CDROM's.
I am pretty sure it is the one.

Not processed in any way:

Hacked something together in FM8:

Gotta do the cut 'n loop yourself tho.

No, I don't think it's that EII choir, that sound is much breathier than the Ethnicolor sound. Actually, I think I know which one it is in the IIx library, it has the front end taken off.
