Hardware Sampler with the most sound f**k possibilities
hey all,
I'm in the market for a new sampler, both for live use and studio destruction, so i've got a few questions and requirements
what reasonably priced (read $700 ish) HARDWARE sampler can I find with the most ways to manipulate the samples? I was using an mpc 1000 for a while with the JJOS but that really doesnt offer much. I'm talking filters, fx, crazy stretching and manipulation, etc...
preferably something that is relatively easy to get around, and with a keyboard (though the keyboard is not required).
also preferably something with a reliable storage method (i.e. not zip disks, I don't need click death)
any suggestions guys?
Thanks

Personal experience suggests that E-mu stuff, even fairly low end ones like the ESI-4000, offers a lot of mangling possibilities.

Sounds like you're describing a V-Synth. I think someone was selling one on here for $700 or $800 recently, they are seriously undervalued at the moment.

anything less pricey? the v synth is just above what I'm willing to pay, though i've definitely considered it, so what else BESIDES the v synth?

roland sp-303 or 404 and a kaoss pad. 404 saves to CF which is a big plus.

Oh yeah, V-Synth definately. I would say, though, that a Yamaha A4000/A5000 should also be considered. But if you can stretch the budget go for the V-Synth

I think you got a copy of Endless Thoughts, right? Not the best example but all that weird droney s**t in the background is V Synth, quite a few of the leads and basses are too.
You really did describe the V though, to a tee. I guess you could mangle up all your samples with software and hardware fx and just dump them into a sampler with a built in SCSI hard drive, as those are usually pretty low maintenance once you get it all set up.
Still though, V Synth.

Emu Ultra series samplers- since you want a keyboard that would be an E4k- i don't see any for sale right now... but they have the whole "cords" modulation routing system built in.

I reckon just get one. Better off spending a little more and getting the exact perfect thing than hunting around for something that comes close but doesn't deliver in the end.Joey wrote:anything less pricey? the v synth is just above what I'm willing to pay, though i've definitely considered it, so what else BESIDES the v synth?
I might do a little recording tonight with mine so you can see some stuff that can be done with it. No promises I'll get anything finished though.

This is a pretty noisy youtube demo of one in action.
A very simple demo of the time trip pad
Also note that Skinny Puppy has been using Vsynth all over the past couple albums and it's been on the road with them for the past couple tours if that says anything.

I think Amon Tobin also uses one.
Re: Hardware Sampler with the most sound f**k possibiliti
It seems that Simon Posford (Shpongle, Younger Brother) uses V-synth a lot for crazy mangled psychedelic vocals. See, for example, this gearslutz thread.Joey wrote:one thing though, does anyone have any sound demos of the v synth doing somethign taht isnt some cheesy sax sample or a jordan ruddess wannabe?

Re: Hardware Sampler with the most sound f**k possibiliti
I'd take a look at Yamaha A4000 and A5000 if I were in your shoes. I use a A4000 in my setup and it is way more easy to understand than the EMU E4 I used to have (at least for me). It has some decent FX onboard too which works great when I just use it as an processor on incoming audio. I got mine fully loaded with RAM, an internal harddrive and a SCSI-CD for less than 200$. Great value for the money! The V-Synth is a nice machine, but it didn't do it for me as I always got lost in drone-land with it...
