Chicken Systems Motif Creator---start of a trend?

Post by meatballfulton » Thu Jul 22, 2010 6:13 pm

For a long time we have been used to getting free software tools from hardware mfrs like patch editors, librarians, sample editors, etc. This decimated the third-party software industry that used to supply such tools in the past. As users this has been a problem, often the mfr supplied tools leave much to be desired (SoundTower editors for DSI synths anyone?) while third party software has to compete with a free product :?

Now Chicken Systems, a company that supplies tools for samplers, has come up with their first product in a new series, Motif Creator. Designed to support the Yamaha Motif, Motif ES and Motif XS keyboards, this software allows you to manipulate samples inside Yamaha files which is something the Yamaha editors do not allow. While the Yamaha editors talk to the hardware directly, Motif Creator only works with files...no need to have the synth fired up to set up patch banks using samples 8-)

--- The feature that has me ready to buy is the ability to open up "All Voice" files dumped from a Motif and move patches between them. An All Voice file contains not only the patch data but also all the samples used by those patches. Previously, moving patches with samples from one bank to another was a cumbersome manual procedure that required the user to figure out what samples were used by each patch, find where those samples were loaded in memory and then edit the patch to point to them. Motif Creator does all this for you automatically.

--- A cool secondary feature is importing patches from Kontakt, NN-XT, SoundFont, etc. libraries and dropping them into an All Voice file ready to go...no need to program a new Motif patch, load and map all the individual samples, etc. =D>

--- Finally the software can export the samples from the All Voice file into an editor, tweak the samples and then export back in to the All Voice file with no need to edit inside the Motif any more.

Even after 5 years of owning a Motif, I seldom use the sampler for anything because working with patch banks containing multisampled patches was a lot of work. Motif Creator changes the whole game.

Chicken Systems promises more products in the Creator series (for Fantoms, Tritons, MPCs?). It should be interesting to see how this develops.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

they probably *won't* make one for the M3 because that would just duplicate the editor that comes with the M3...

Nice! I might have to check this puppy out. File/sample management on the Motif leaves much to be desired.

I've just grabbed chicken sys translator and despite a few initial blips so far so good. I love hardware but what I don't love is things that take no time in software taking loads of time in hardware! Translator has helped with this and if thry made a proper mpc 4000 creator id probably buy!
