ESI 2000...overlap with e6400?

Post by code green » Tue Jan 04, 2011 12:48 am

I put this here in Samplers, rather than creating a versus thread...apologies if I should've done that instead.

I picked up an ESI-2000 impulsively since the price was nice...and because a brain freeze had me thinking it was an Ensoniq sampler rather than an E-mu one--was basically looking to add another sampler flavor. I own an e6400 Ultra (and like it a lot), so when I got the ES!-2000 and discovered it was (duh) E-mu, it seemed to me basically a stripped down version of the e6400. The E-mu corporate history page tells me, though, that they have different progenitors--the ESI descended from the EIII, while the e6400 is a descendant of the EIV. So...

Anyone out there who has experience with both (Tallow?): Does having the e6400 render the ESI-2000 redundant? Added multitimbral-ity is not an issue for me. I know people rave about the filters of the ESI-2000...and I know from doing a search that AG hates the thing (which kinda makes me like it more ;) ).

To those who would say--investigate on your own by A/B-ing them, I say fair enough. But I'm not looking for subjective differences (and if it comes down to those being the primary differences, that's exactly what I'll do). I'm interested in features beyond the mere obvious specs such as memory, ins/outs, etc....and as I don't have a lot of time to integrate this into my studio and check for myself thought I'd check here to see if anyone could give me the quick and dirty version.

Many thanks,
e

Never had the e6400, but I would definitely prefer it over the ESI2000. Of course, that's a subjective opinion.

Maybe Hideaway Studio? madtheory?

Thanks Tallow--appreciate it. It's the interface that makes you feel this way? Just to be clear, the e6400 isn't going anywhere...this is just about whether there's enough space between the two, either feature or flavor-wise, to justify keeping the ESI. I'm starting to think, though, that it's unrealistic of me to think about keeping something that's a lot less easy to use than my other samplers--it could have algorithms to make samples sound like nude hippie chicks doing exotic drugs off my genitals and it'd still gather dust if it's a chore relative to what I have.

I'll check out the manual (this just occurred to me; been sick and stupid)...and will probably end up passing it on for what I got it to someone here who's jonesing for a hardware sampler.

Interface, etc, but the e6400 is just superior in most all regards. It's not like the ESI is some funky old sampler (EPS) or imparts some insane/beautiful color (S612/Emax), it's just a rather vanilla (though very nice) sampler.

Yes the ESI is a budget machine, the e6400 is superior in every way.
