Question about Fairlight samples

Post by paulh » Mon Jan 24, 2011 9:46 pm

hi guys

sorry if this a bit off topic buti asked this over at gearslutz to no avail and as you all seem to know your stuff

i've been trying for years to find out the source of the kick and snare used by trevor horn , Keith Leblanc, big audio dynamite( beyond the pale), there are on songs like how to be a millionaire by abc, king of the beat-tackhead,and beat box a.o.n.
i've tracked them down to being most likly fairlight sounds but having got hold of the fairlight presets found them to not be there also not in the colection of fairlight sounds from kent willianms . anyone have any more info on this?
it would make my day to get hold of those sounds !

i do think i may have found the kick now from one of the links at the top of this forum but not sure about the snare unless its a procesed version of the collins snare.

cheers

paul

yes i have , nice but not the sounds in question. these are very distictive with gated reverb and quite big and noisy in the first place. not just procesing because they are the same sounds on diferent records with diferent producers .

OK, you're talking about at least 6 entirely different sounds. So there isn't one answer! If you posted audio clips it would help. AON used the Linn and the Fairlight. You can buy "JJ Jeczalik's Art of Sampling" for all their old drum sounds.

There is definitely processing involved despite what you say. The similarity is due to fashion. The gated sound was very popular, and the AON sound was extremely popular also. Both of these fashions were so influential in the eighties that Kraftwerk delayed releasing their original "Tour de France" album in order to get up to date (then they missed the boat slightly with "Electric Cafe").

ok got some clips, regards the examples i gave they are all definitely procesed diferently but do possibley share the same starting 'sample' it's the kick that is most odvious. one clip has a few snares in the fill but i would asume they all come from the same source as it was recorded in 86.

I reckon it's an E-mu drumulator on those video clips.

Art Of Noise was apparently the drummer from Yes sampled into a fairlight and programmed by JJ.

All those kicks are the AON one from Beatbox. This was indeed sampled from a recording made by Gary Langan during sessions for 90125. Never released because Trevor Horn decided to wipe the tape and start again. Langan kept the tape though, and he and JJ programmed up some stuff on the Fairlight using samples of those drums. Dudley and Horn joined in and AON was formed.

So you could sample it off Beatbox like the makers of the clips you posted, or buy JJ Jeczalik Art of Sampling.

Yeah aside from the art of noise, the tackhead sounds are drumulator or dmx with chips from digidrums.

kawai R50e has some art of noise samples in it, including the orchestra stabs. can be had vey cheaply and is fun to play on.
