What's the Best Modern Workstation/Sampler These Days

Post by Erotic Cabaret » Tue Mar 01, 2011 11:56 pm

I haven't bought a sampler or a workstation in ages...what's the best board these days?

I recommend the Roland Fantom X series. I bought a X6 new back in 2007 and later picked up a used X6 in great condition at a good price ($1200 in '07 with Ethnic SRX expansion) from Analog Haven to keep at my furniture shop to tinker with with the mood hits me. You can find them used for under $1K these days. It has one of the best grand piano sounds I've heard and you can add up to 4 SRX expansion boards. Not only do they sample and sequence but also have 8 tracks of STEREO audio recording and a fun arpeggiator which I've used to trigger external MIDI devices (including analog gear via MIDI to CV converter).

I'm interested in a Motif XS6 and a Kurzweil PC3X. Anyone with experience using those?

I'm not saying you absolutely must get it, but you'd be crazy not to consider the new Korg Kronos. It's a no-brainer in my book, the by far most feature packed workstation at the moment.

Fair enough, but I've never been impressed with Korg's workstations...and that's saying a lot considering I've used the OASYS extensively. Their sampling isn't as good as Yamaha's or Kurzweil's.

'Tis a fine workstation, but sure is no sampler English.

I have the Motif XF6 as well as the ES6...never had an XS, though. What would you like to know?
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

How are the electric bass sounds and organ sounds?

Have you compared it to the new Motifs?

I've used a PC3X and I can confirm that it does not contain a sampler. I have not used a Motif of any kind, but Yamaha's website says they have sampling capabilities, and I can't think of a reason why they'd lie about it.

The PC3K8 has user sample playback capability but you'd need to record the samples to a computer first then load them via USB.

What does mean modern?
I would say Korg Kronos, for the features it has, date of release, and sampling capabilities.
His sex dungeons are rumored to hold hundreds of people in secret locations around the world.

one of my personal favs - the Roland V-Synth. I've had loads of fun with it at the samash nearby and also wonderful videos and sounds come out of this guy JayB on youtube. I've provided a link below - which, if your into trance and stuff, you might find quite good.
