Hello there,
I've always wanted to try out a sampler, but I have no experience how it works... I've seen an Akai S6000 for sale locally for $120, so I was wondering if that would be a good unit to start learning a bit about sampling? If yes, what should I be aware of before buying it?

Well, I decided to get it. At this price, I won't be losing much if I don't like it or can't work with it!

To be honest the big display probably makes it easier than most and $120 is a great price.

Yeah, and the thing is huge! It goes way deeper than any rack unit I ever saw. With an extension cord to the display module, I'll be able to leave the box almost on the floor (out of reach, but mostly out of the way)!

Let's all just sit back a moment and reflect on the fact that you can now buy an Akai S6000 for $120.
At least, in the States you can. Doesn't seem like many were sold down here - I've been waiting for one to crop up secondhand for ages. Plenty of S5000s, but I really, really want that handy remote interface.

The damn extension cord doesn't work, and I can't put this big a*s rack anywhere remotely accessible!
So I didn't look it up for a long time, sitting on the floor, and I really don't like the way it looks for the future...

do you have the proper cable? it needs to be a "direct" connection cable, i think that's how they call it. regular screen cable don't work

Re: First time user: Akai S6000?
Just wanted to add that if you get it working, by all means update to the latest OS as soon as possible. When I bought an S5000(for the ridiculous price of $1100 in 1999), before the update, the OS kept corrupting the file system of whatever media I tried to use.
I am no longer in pursuit of vintage synths. The generally absurd inflation from demand versus practical use and maintenance costs is no longer viable. The internet has suffocated and vanquished yet another wonderful hobby. Too bad.
