Funny that people go mental when he buys another expensive piece of kit... I understand the envy part of it -- I'd love to be able to own/play/bugger one. Regardless of how you feel about his music, if I were in his shoes, I'd be doing probably something quite similar, if not entirely identical. A mighty wall of modcan (literally)? A monster Buchla? a Euro kit as tall as I am? (I shalt not be judged)

Joel spends the majority of his free time pissing about on his various goodies and some of that ends up in his next release, and we can all go mental over the inclusion of 'obviously buchlaic' sounds therein (or what-have-you)

I'm a big fan of Joel's studio. I love that he's just going all-out and buying whatever synths he wants to just because he CAN. The guy makes $100k for a single Las vegas concert (it was documented in Rolling Stone, about the same as Elvis made back in the 70s), why not spend it on something awesome like a Fairlight CMI or a wall-sized Modcan modular synth.

And they do end up on his albums anyway. He frequently hosts live camera sessions where he noodles on random synths while chatting with fans/geeks on twitter. I had him demo the EMS Synthi AKS for a while. Someone else asked "what's that thing with all the knobs? (referring to the synthi)."

That's when he said the quote I have as signature. The guy is funny and a total nerd. He ignores most of the horde of gushing praise stuff, but replies happily to gear nerd questions.

I'm just glad he's buying a whole bunch of modules even if he doesn't know how to use them cause it's really good for the manufacturers.

Also, getting new gear always triggers my inspiration to the max. Probably does with all musicians. Pro or non-professional. A new piece of gear that you have to study and learn is a great way to trigger the creative juices, and suddenly you've spent 10 hours recording stuff into cubase.
