EPS Worth Resurrection?

Post by plewto » Sun May 19, 2013 2:15 am

I have an early EPS which I suspect has a wonky power supply but otherwise is in very good shape. I have actually tried to give it away a few times now but somehow, like a cat, it keeps coming back.

My question; is it worth my time and money to resurrect? I will only be using it in the studio and power supplys can be obtained for ~$40

On the pro side I have a large collection of samples for it, some of which sound very nice. It is also physically a much nicer keyboard then what I'm currently using and there is also the poly after touch.

On the con side there is the ancient floppy format and studio space is at a premium. At least one keyboard would have to find a new perch in an already cramped room. I guess I could start snaking cables across the hall but suspect the significant other would have issues with that.

Just wanted others thoughts

Since you have a large sample library, I'd keep it. If you decide to trash it, at least try and find a school, etc. that could make use of it. Some young person might welcome the old girl with open arms and open mind.

RESURRECT IT!

I love old boards, samplers, etc. Please don't let it die! :)

Totally looks like a candidate for fitting an HxC floppy emulator.

I keep meaning to purchase one of the HxC floppy emulators for my EPS, but I've got a list of other things I need/want to spend money on first. I also keep hoping another company will create a more affordable version of a similar product, so I can retrofit all of my old samplers and be done with the damned floppies. :D

They are great keyboards and the sound selection is so unique.

Get the HXC and bring that thing back to life. I have lots of disk images in HXC format I would gladly share with you.

I've a HxC in my Amiga 1200 which I rarely use (I'm using WHDLoad for games), so I'm going to fit it into my EPS-16+. Seems like a good combo.

What's wrong with it exactly?

Yea resurrect it! 16+ user here

When I got mine it would lock up every 30 mins and generally be very unreliable. I spoke to some one who said if it's like all other Ensoniq's he'd seen to have a look for dry joints on the PSU.

Any way re-worked the PSU and cleaned up the connector and it's been ok now for 2 years

I vote yes. Ensonique products are worth their weight in gold.

Even though I also have an ASR-10, I still have my EPS which sort of works, but the display is dead. The key action on the EPS is still very comfortable, the poly AT extremely responsive, and the sample editing packs a ton of useful features. I vote worth resurrecting if you can.

for a 40 dollar repair, at worst you can flip it (should get you $150-250.)
