Personal Jesus electro snare sound
Anyone know where that electro snare thing in Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus is taken from? You can hear it clearly at the very end of the song. I assume it is a slightly processed original sample from some sampler or drum machine..?

Re: Personal Jesus electro snare sound
Towards the end of the song, I hear a "slap" or "slapstick" on beat 2 and what kind of sounds like a 909 snare on beat 4 and the following 2 triplets.
There's really no telling with DM. I'm pretty sure they mad a lot of their own samples.

Thanks Z for helping! Just realized I had forgotten to add a clip. Fixed now. Please have a listen as there are different versions of this song. The sound is the one with an echoe at the very end of the song.

Re: Personal Jesus electro snare sound
Could be any of these

Re: Personal Jesus electro snare sound
No it couldn't because he hadn't been in the band for 9 years
Alan layered the h**l out of samples, the snare you're talking about sounds like it could be at least 3 things stacked up (rim+noise hit/tail+??sped up 909 snare?) they use a shitload 2600 sounds, noise could possibly be from that..or an obi, or an axxe.. or god knows what with those guys ;]

Yeah probably. I'm convinced I've heard something very similar somewhere though. Sounds so familiar.mute wrote:No it couldn't because he hadn't been in the band for 9 years![]()

Anyone used the Korg M1 enough to say something about whether or not it could have been used for this?
Re: Personal Jesus electro snare sound
If you're talking about the phased snare thing, it just sounds like a beat box snare with a phaser on it and sampled and more processing.
This hit sounds a lot like a snare in World in My Eyes which I always thought was a sample from this (around 8 or 9 seconds in):

Plus321 I think that's it. Think I should be able to make something close enough with the right snare and a phaser and some additional processing experimenting. Thanks for the tip and that clip example also! It didn't sound as good to me but like you said, 8-9 seconds into it, it gives a good idea of how close just a phaser would get me in creating a sound like this. Good call! I'll crawl back into my amateur cave now

Haha, I didn't mean to seem rude. I only know this because I've thought of this before and it only came to me when I was listening to that Fad Gadget album one day.
Re: Personal Jesus electro snare sound
I wanted a snare like that for one of my tracks so i'll tell you how i did it.
I used the korg monotron for the metalic sound, the monotron is good for this because of the fast lfo to filter mod.
I then got an 808 snare and kick and layered them all using Guru. Lastly i added a gated reverd, which i do a lot to snare hits.
The result is very close to that sound in world in my eyes and at the end of personal jesus.
Here is a link to my track, the snare comes in after the intro, about 35 seconds in.
