Looking for a standalone mellotron sample pack

Post by ianmgull » Thu May 15, 2014 6:13 pm

I was wondering if anyone had a source for a sample pack with individual samples of the old mellotron sounds. I know there are a bunch of software based options now but I'm looking for something to load on my MPC1000 so individual audio files would be ideal.

I've searched quite a bit and there are a lot of dead links out there so if anyone has any leads I'd appreciate it.

Free ones, eh not so much, but you can find some cheap sample packs of varying quality on eBay.

Hammond Dave has been selling his Mellotron samples for $20 for at least 10 years...because I bought them back then.

He provides all the WAVs and patches for your a small choice of samplers...Yamaha Motif is one. I have the Motif and I found every patch needed some edits....we are not talking Eric Persing level sound design! The samples are quite raw sounding and each key was sampled for the full length so it has character (including some dodgy tuning). He only has the basics...flute, cello, 3 violins, mixed choir, brass...this is not an exhaustive library of every tape ever found buried in Mike Pinder's closet.

Before I had a Motif, I owned a Zoom ST224 sampler and loaded the WAVs as one shots to play from a MIDI keyboard or sequence on the sampler. The samples worked great with that, too. Anyway, it certainly was worth more than the $20 I paid. A very satisfied customer.

Dave also sells combo organ sample sets which I have not heard beyond the demos but I assume they are similarly funky ;)
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

Look for the 'Mello Zone' (AKAI) oder Mello Trax (.wav) packs by MasterBits, one CD each. They sound excellent and very authentic (I have both versions).

Not sure if you are a Logic user or not, but in the latest update a pretty extensive Mellotron instrument was added. You should be able to dig into the program files and grab the WAV's. I was pretty excited at the addition.

The ones millhouse linked to are solid. It's a Mellotron, it should be basic and dirty.
