Akai S5000 + internal SCSI drive installation

Hi

I'm totally new to samplers, hardware, making music like this .. ect. so forgive my ignorance.

I'm trying to install an internal SCSI drive in my akai s5000 sampler and I'm not quite sure how to do it.

I bought this drive for the akai s5000.:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/73GB-73-GB-Inte ... 1626863754?

now from looking at this thread:

http://www.vintagesynth.com/forum/viewt ... =3&t=24729

it seems to me I'll need some sort of scsi bridge connector or adapter of some kind? Something that can connect the drive to the 50 pin cable. Does this piece need to be able to give the drive power as well somehow? like with those banana clips doohickey from that thread look like they do.

i have no idea really. like i said i'm totally new to this stuff. be gentle lol

This is what I have in mine (it's 36Gb and was a lot cheaper, around £70) and it works great. I even transplanted it from my old S5000 into the new one without any problems and the floppy drive is still operational. Remember to put little rubber washers under all the screws connected to the chassis; that'll make the whole system quieter.

There is indeed a printed circuit (adapter?) connected between the drive and the ribbon as shown in the photos below:

The other end of the ribbon goes here (at the back of the unit - you can see the ribbon connected):

The power supply goes here (the one with a red, yellow and two black wires going into it):

I hope this helps. Remember to attach the drive to the bottom of the unit as well; there are two holes available to that effect. And remember the washers (tiny doughnut-shaped rubber ones)! Feel free to ask if you have any questions but I'm no expert either.

The drive you bought probably has a Fast Wide SCSI connector (68 pin) or the 80 pin connector (ultra wide, iirc)

the auction claims that they adapted it to 50-pin, did it come with an adaptor card? If it didn't, talk to the people who sold you the drive, as the auction claims the drive is adapted to 50 pin.

Thats what confused me .. because I figured when I read that part of the auction that it'd be a fairly easy hookup to a standard 50 PIN SCSI cable (like in the same fashion the floppy drive is connected. i think that's a standard 50 pin cable right?) .. but then when i got the drive that did not seem to be the case. I thought maybe i misunderstood the description as such so i figured i'd do some research into it before contacting the seller .. which i will definitely do.

if for whatever reason i can't get the adapter from them or can't return the drive or something .. i'm hoping i can just determine the correct adapter / kit / bridge connector (and an additional 50 PIN cable i think?) .. and purchase it accordingly .. i'd prefer not to return the drive as its pretty large storage capacity and wasn't too expensive (esp compared to external scsi drives). i wouldnt mind just buying the additional parts i need if i can figure out what they are and puting it all together.

The Auction Says:
For compatibility with SCSI-1 and SCSI-2, we have fitted this 80 pin drive with a standard 50 pin SCSI connector
If that wasn't in there (it is a small PCB that sits on the back of the drive, like pictured above) then ask the seller. Otherwise, the seller wasn't being truthful in the auction.

yeah it definitely didnt have anything like that. it was literally JUST the drive. i'll have to contact them
