Ensoniq ASR-X

Post by Moxsam » Sat Nov 12, 2016 1:12 pm

Hi there,

I have a quick question for those in the know....

I'm looking to purchase an Ensoniq ASR X. I found one locally and the ad reads "Has the rare SCSI option but I don't have a SCSI drive to provide for that."

I'm just getting into synths and sampling. I currently have an SQ80 and and EPS16 classic which I have been learning on and enjoying very much. I've read a little about SCSI but do not know what I am getting into.

Am I going to be able to find a SCSI drive? What do I look for? Do I need one? Are there any recommendations?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You don't strictly need one, but it is handy. And yes, you'll be able to find one. Iomega ZIP drives are typical, but make sure to get the more rare SCSI version as there are also USB and Parallel Port versions. It'll probably run you $40-50 for the drive and a few disks.

Scsi cf card readers are more expensive, but very much worth the investment. Sometimes those old zip disks are unreliable, and you don't get that much space. Zip drives frequently accompany old samplers for free as part of the sale on ebay, which can sometimes be a good way to kill 2 birds with one stone, if you're looking to expand your gear list
This looks like a psychotropic reaction. No wonder it's so popular...

Yes, SCSI drives are easy to find and not so expensive.

Looks like, just like me, you're really into Ensoniq.

Good luck with the ASR-X

I wouldn't want an old sampler without a decent way to store files. SCSI a way to do that.
