Fried Korg Electribe EMX

Post by Mo » Sat Oct 14, 2006 7:19 am

This is just great... My first two posts to the forums are about how I don't know how to take care of my gear! :x

While overseas I plugged my EMX into a 240 outlet (when it is suited for a 120 outlet... I was using a converter on the wrong setting... as if that justifies anything). It ended up frying the power adaptor (it was litterally smoking and it melted!), without tripping the built in fuse, and then fried my EMX. Now that I'm using a new power supply with the proper voltage all the lights come on, but nothing functions and the LCD screen is backlit, but blank, and nothing flashes. It would be nice if it could be repaired, but if not, I would at least like the memory salvaged somehow (maybe frankensteined into a new EMX or put on a new smartmedia card). Is that even possible? I have a good two and a half years worth of ideas I would be heart broken to lose.

Your best course of action would be to send it to a Korg service center.

If we weren't so far apart, I'd say I'd look at it to evaluate the extension of the damages.

Side note: if it's not salvageable, please don't throw it away: I'd sure have use for it. I buy dead and broken gear.

Yeah, I really need to back up my information better. I should have learned this lesson long ago.

Hey, Mas, if the EMX-1 is unsalvagable, or costs me more than it's worth to fix, I'll just send it to you for free :) I don't know anything about circuit bending or soldering, or anything of the sort, so hanging onto it would do me no good.

And on that subject, you seem like the right person to ask; what are the best books/sources for a beginner-beginner to get into electronics/homemade synths/etc. (I checked out your store, but there weren't any books in the books section :( ) I was told a good way to get started is by buying one of the PAiA kits, but I don't know how much of an actual understanding that will give me if all I'm doing is following instructions.

Thanks :)

Hi!

Thanks for the offer and will gladly accept it. I can even pay for the shipping if you want me too.

About the books, there are plenty: go to the website and you'll see in store>books a navigation bar at the left called "Book Menu". Point your mouse there to expand it. And then choose a category. I'm teaming up with mone other than Amazon.ca.

Some great books are "The Art Of Electronics", "Basic Electronics" by Gob, "Electronics for Inventors", etc. But lemme check in my own library. I'm due for a clean up so I might have some good books for you for cheap.

Please allow me to come back to you on this. I'll prepare a recommended reading list asap.
