RME Fireface 800 Problems

Post by burns46824 » Mon Oct 23, 2006 6:02 am

I've been using a Fireface 800 for several months now. I've been having trouble lately tho.

For months, it worked perfectly, but now I've begun to hear a "crackling" sound...the same type of sound you might hear if you had set the latency settings to low on a soft synth. I'm not using any soft synths, so that's not a problem!

Anyway, the recorded audio seems to be ok...at least I can't see any obvious spikes or artifacts by looking at the wav files. The crackling only happens when I record or play back audio. When I press playback on my DAW (Cubase SX3), the "crackling" begins very sparsely...then it gets worse and more frequent.

I've tried just about everything...I'm running 2GB or ram so I don't think it has to do with memory issues. Um, I'm running a MacBook Pro (Intel processors)...I'm mostly using it thru Windows beta, but I installed it on OSX as well. Hmmm...why was everything working and then now it's not? I know for sure it's not the cables or the monitors I'm using.

I'm running at the standard buffer rate (256 or something like that). 24 bit 96 Khz. Auto Sync. This gives me about 3.6 ms of latency (both input and output). Mind you, this setup was working perfectly for several months.

Also, the crackling doesn't sound the same every time during playback...in other words, it happens at random, different spots every time. What's going on? Do I have a bad fireface?

There's your problem. Install SX in OSX and use that. The audio in OSX is a core part of the operating system, rather than the messing background task stuff in windows.

Why would you use windows anyway? Got some plugin you can't live without?

To answer your question, yes, I have a plug in I really can't live without for windows. Anyway, the same problems occurred with OSX...actually it's worse with OSX.

Honestly, I don't know why I bought a MacBook Pro.

Plus, the sample and bit rate keep changing on me when I try to record on the Mac side...and I cannot figure out how to change that either. Is the fireface the problem?

Sounds like the problem is you don't know how to use it. The sample rate and bit depth shouldn't change by themselves. Have a bit of a read of the manual perhaps.

I use a couple of machines at work with RME digiface interfaces, they work fine. To change the sample rate and bit depth you use the RME utility program or you should be able to do it in the preferences of your sequencer.
