JX3P sequencer issue

Post by 27cornflakes » Fri Nov 01, 2019 1:37 pm

Hi, this is my first post, but since my synth-hoarding is habitual, it won't be my last! I have a simple issue that is driving me nuts. I have a Roland JX3P that had a dodgy sequencer rate slider. It worked in that it sped up and slowed down as it should, but it was scratchy and not always precise. I swapped it out for a new direct replacement. Since then, the rate on my sequencer ranges from fast to super fast with no ability to slow a sequence down to usable tempo. Suspecting a bad slider, I replaced the replacement but the same thing occurs. Since this synth has been around for 35 years I can't be the first to have this issue, yet I can find no solutions on the information super-highway. Anybody have any ideas?

cheers, chris

Aha! Solved my own problem courtesy of Mike at ProAudioElectronics in Tampa. It seems that it is common on synths of this period for the traces around the pin sockets to be compromised when components are removed. My soldering was fine, but one of the three pins had a trace that fell 1mm short of my solder pad. Mike knew that the 'super fast sequencer rate' was related to connections at one of the three pins, and he was right.

Hope this helps somebody else out. A simple fix in the end.

On a related issue, the basic sequencer works fine, but the overdub-while-monitoring does not work. Pressing the tie button+write should allow one to hear the previously recorded phrase while overdubbing new notes. My sequencer does not go into overdub mode. Any ideas?

thank,
chris
