I realize that not many of you here may own a Gaia, so this might be a long shot. And yeah, yeah, I've read all the comments from people who think this is a crappy synth -- I'm not here for any of that. I've had mine over two years, and I've gotten some really great sounds out of it.
However, in the past week, I've noticed odd behavior with the LFO that I've never noticed before. For the first concern, I'm just curious if it is just a bug in the overall design of the keyboard, or if mine has developed a defect -- and this is very easy for anybody with a Gaia to test out. It involves the LFO modulating the filter.
What happens is that, when I have the LFO set to sine wave, and then turn up the filter modulation lever all the way, the modulation becomes an almost on/off effect, almost like a square wave. If I set the LFO filter lever to a lower intensity, it sounds normal -- you get a smooth filter sweep, like you would expect with a sine wave LFO modulating the filter. But at maximum level, the modulation becomes an abrupt on/off effect.
So, if anyone has a Gaia, just select a patch where you can hear a difference in modulation when you move the LFO filter modulation slider. It might be best to either use a patch that only uses one of the three tones, or to just set it so that you are adjusting all tones that are switched on at once. Set the LFO to sine wave, and then slowly move the LFO filter slider up to it's highest positive intensity, and let me know what happens. If the filter sweep stays smooth, but just gets more intense, then my unit is probably defective. But if yours also becomes an abrupt on/off effect, then it's probably just a design flaw from Roland.
My other issue is that on certain patches, even when all three LFO sliders (pitch, filter, amp) are set in the middle at zero, I'm still hearing a slight warbling -- it sounds like it's amplifier mod, but could be filter. It's not PWM, as I also set that to zero -- and plus, the patches I'm hearing it on aren't using pulse waves, anyway. I noticed it because I suddenly heard like the volume of certain patches was changing as I was playing, which I hadn't noticed before -- and these are patches that I designed and saved months ago. I can "program around" this by setting the LFO to it's slowest setting and setting maximum delay, but something doesn't seem quite right there, either.
Thanks for any input.
